Poor Oral health- can be a reason for poor heart health

People who are having periodontal disease or gum disease should once go for a heart checkup. This is because oral health is important and crucial for overall health. It seems that there is no link between oral disease and heart disease but some studies show that unhealthy gums can cause heart disease at higher risk than healthy ones.

The link between oral health and cardiac health is due to the spread of bacteria. The bacteria from mouth travel to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. When this bloodstream reaches to heart, it can cause damage and inflammation of the lining of the delicate heart.

Oral bacteria can also cause blood clots. The immune system’s response to the toxins could harm vessel walls or make blood clot more easily.

Also, some species of bacteria that cause periodontitis have been found in the atherosclerotic plaque in arteries in the heart and elsewhere.

Oral health is not only related to cardiac health, but it is also related to overall health. That’s reason enough to do what you can to make oral health a priority. Brushing and flossing every day, and visiting your dentist at least twice a year for regular cleanings and oral exams will pay off for your oral health and just may benefit your heart as well.
