Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti is an annual festival in India celebrated on 14 April in memory of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The significance of the day is that Babasaheb Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891. Since 2015 it has been celebrated as an official public holiday all over India. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated not just in India but all World celebrated this day.

Ambedkar Jayanti parade is carried out by his followers at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai and Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur. It is a tradition for senior political persons, such as President, Prime Minister and leaders of major political parties, to pay homage at the statue of Babasaheb’s Ambedkar at the Parliament of India in New Delhi. It is celebrated in the whole world especially by Dalits, Adivasi, labor workers, women and also those who embraced Buddhism after his example. In India, many peoples visit local statues commemorating Ambedkar in procession with a lot of fanfare.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was a politician, economist, Indian jurist and social reformer who inspired the Dalit’s movement and campaigned against social discrimination for the untouchables (Dalit’s). He was independent India’s first law and justice minister and an architect of the Constitution of India.s

History

Babasaheb B.R. Ambedkar’s first birthday was publically celebrated on 14 April 1928 in Pune, by social activist and Ambedkarite Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay. He started the tradition of Babasaheb’s birth anniversary or Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti. On 14 April 1990, Ambedkar was rewarded with the Bharat Ratna award. The same year his life-size portrait was also presented in the Central Hall of Parliament. The period from 14 April 1990 – 14 April 1991 was celebrated as “Year of Social Justice” in the memory of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Tributes

Indian Post issued stamps dedicated to Ambedkar’s birthday in the year 1966, 1973, 1991, 2001, and 2013, and featured him on other stamps in 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Government of India Issued 10 and 125 Rupees coins in 2015 to mark the 125th Birthday Anniversary in the honor of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar. As per the Government of Maharashtra 14 April is celebrated as Knowledge Day in memory of Babasaheb’s Ambedkar. In 2017, on the occasion of Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti, Twitter launched Dr. Ambedkar emoji as a tribute to the legend.
