World Hypertension Day: Follow healthy heart tips to avoid hypertension

On May 17, World Hypertension Day is celebrated worldwide for people to encourage healthy heart practices. The purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness about high blood pressure, its symptoms and precautions to control this silent killer.

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a serious medical condition that increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure and it is one of the leading causes of the early death of people. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, 1.13 billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure. During Hypertension, the blood pressure level of a person crosses the barrier of 120/80 mm Hg. It should be controlled in time to reduce the chances of occurrence of other diseases. Therefore, World Hypertension Day is celebrated every year on 17 May to spread awareness about it.

World Hypertension Day 2020 Theme

Every year WHO sets a theme for World Hypertension Day and this time on World Hypertension Day 2020 theme is, “Measure your blood pressure, control it and live longer”. This means that check your blood pressure on regular intervals, if any increase or decrease is seen, consult the doctor and control it to live longer.

A person can avoid high blood pressure problem by following some very simple healthy heart habits

 Reduce the salt intake. Do not take more than 5 grams of salt daily.

Eat fresh fruits and green vegetables regularly.

Avoid taking saturated fat and trans fat, which can increase the problem of high blood pressure.

Avoid habits of drinking alcohol and smoking and chewing tobacco.

Exercise regularly.
