ESPN Awards 2019: PV Sindhu scored a hat-trick as Female Sportsperson of the Year

In the ESPN Sports Awards Badminton world champion PV Sindhu scored a hat-trick. Sindhu became the Female Sportsperson of the Year for the third consecutive year. Also, her victory over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the finals of the World Championship was chosen as the Moment of the Year. She left Rani Rampal and MC Mary Kom behind.

Young shooter Saurabh Chaudhary, who was the best emerging athlete last year, received two awards. He received the Male Sportsperson of the Year Award as well as the Team of the Year Award with Manu Bhaker. Saurabh defeated Bajrang Punia and Amit Panghal. The winners were chosen by a 16 member panel based on the 2019 performance of players. Saurabh won 5 gold medals in the World Cup last year.

Sprinter Duti Chand became the first winner to receive ‘The Courage Award‘. He showed great courage on-field and off-field. Dutti won the battle with the World Athletics Body over gender-related rules and returned to the track. He also admitted to being in a gay relationship. Chess player Koneru Hampi returned and won the World Rapid title in December. He received the Comeback of the Year Award. In the race for the award, Hampi overtook hockey player Rupinderpal Singh and MMA fighter Ritu Phogat. At the same time, Silver Medalist wrestler Deepak Poonia Emerging Sportsperson was selected for the World Junior Championship.
