World Music Day 2020: 5 health benefits of Music

June 21, the longest day of the year marked as the beginning of summer solstice is also celebrated as World Music Day or Fete de la Musique. World Music Day has its roots in France in the 1980s, but then more than 120 countries around the world, including India, have embraced it.

World Music Day is celebrated by musicians of all genres and ages, whether amateur or experienced, all gather to express through music on various public platforms. Events are primarily held in open areas such as streets, parks, gardens, arenas, stations, or halls. But this year due to coronavirus pandemic the music events will be held on virtual platforms to ensure people’s safety.

World Music Day History

World Music Day has its origin in France but was first proposed by an American artiste Joel Cohen to mark the summer solstice.

French Minister of Culture Jack Lang appointed Maurice Fleuret as the director of music and dance in October 1981. They decided to hold an event that will allow all musicians – amateur and experienced – to show their creativity.

On June 21, 1982, the first World Music Day or Fete de la Musique took place. Over the years, World Music Day has evolved into an “event which mobilizes the musicians of the whole world for the pleasure of the people. Later on, more than 120 countries around the world, including India, have embraced the World Music Day.

Health benefits of Music

Music has the power of healing people suffering from emotional instability, depression, and anxiety. Studies have shown that when you hear the music of your kind and interest, a chemical called dopamine is released by the brain that alters the bad mood. Listening to Music can have the following health benefits:

1. Music that has a slow tempo and no lyrics can benefit in reducing the stress level of a person.

2. Listening to music can help regulate emotions, bring happiness and relaxation to a person.
