Education in Ethiopia is mainly divided into two systems- The Christian system (the traditional one) and the Islam system. Both systems include primary and secondary education for the students while higher education is mainly governed by the government and all the students from both the system get into the choice of the university they have opted for depending on their course. The literacy rate here is quite poor as compared to other countries in Africa with a literacy rate of 49.1 % by the end of 2015. Though the government has taken reforms, there are still concerns about education in Ethiopia. Primary education consists of classes 1 to 8 followed by secondary education from classes 9 to 12, which is quite similar to the Indian model. Then there are institutions for higher studies.

1. Addis Ababa Science and Technology University

This is a technical institute located in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. There are five colleges under the university of Ethiopia that offer courses related to engineering, science, and technology. There are around 20 undergraduate courses, 6 master’s degree courses, and 4 post-doctoral courses. It is the premier technical university in Ethiopia.

2. Addis Ababa University

This is a residential national university located in the capital city of Addis Ababa. This is the oldest higher education institute in Ethiopia, established in the year 1970. There are several colleges under this university in the field of Humanities and language, Social Science, Business and economics, law and governance, basic engineering, and so on. The college and the university has one of the best teaching facilities in the country. Students need to get through an entrance exam with a nice grade to be eligible for admission to this college of Ethiopia.

3. Addis Continental Institute of Public Health

This educational institute of Ethiopia was set up in the year 2006. It is a training institute for public health and teaches how to deal with it. A lot of research work regarding public health is also done here. This was initially set up to make people know about the major health issue concerning the country and make them deal with it by giving proper training. There are trained professionals who teach how to handle various situations regarding public health. This institute is solely based on public health and research.

This is a higher education Institute of Ethiopia located in Adigrat. Students need to go through an admission test known as the Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Examination (EHEEE) to get selected for the college. There are 6 colleges under this university of Ethiopia. College of engineering and technology, medicine and health science, arts and humanities, business and economics, and computer science and technology are the 6 main colleges. This university has one of the best library facilities in the country with a number of reading rooms and research centers.

5. Arba Minch University

This is a national residential university in Ethiopia located in Arba Minch. Students need to go through an admission test known as the Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Examination (EHEEE) to get selected for the college. There are over 70 undergraduate programs, 80 graduate programs, and 13 post-doctoral programs that the university offers. There are 6 campuses of the university with various courses being studied in the field of science and technology, business and marketing, computer technology, humanities and social science, and so on.

6. Debre Markos University

Debre Markos University is a public research university in Ethiopia. The university was set up in the year 2005. The colleges under this university are the college of social science and humanity, college of business and economics, college of natural science and computational science, and college of health science. This is regarded as one of the best universities of Ethiopia with good teaching faculties.

7. Ethiopian civil Service university

This is a public university in Ethiopia that was set up in the year 1995. Its main motive was to encourage more youth to take up civil services as a course and serve the country. Civil service is the main subject taught here along with other important subjects related to the history and culture of the country.

8. Hawassa University

This is a university in Ethiopia located in the city of Hawassa. Students need to go through an admission test known as the Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Examination (EHEEE) to get selected for the college. The college was established in the year 1999 and has over 80 bachelor programs over 100 master programs and 16 post-doctoral programs. This university offers the most number of courses in the country and is known for having the best results overall.

9. Kunuz College

This is a private college in Ethiopia and was established in the year 2002. This college is basically for business, Accounting, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Information Technology, Law, and Secretarial Science. This is one of the best private colleges in the country and is a member of the private higher education institution in Ethiopia.

10. Mekelle University

This is one of the largest public universities in Ethiopia. It has seven colleges with over 90 under-graduate courses and 70 post-graduate courses. Students need to go through an entrance exam to be eligible for admission to this university. Some of the well-known colleges in the university are the college of business and economics, college of law and governance, college of veterinary science ( which is exclusive for this university), and college of health and medical science.
