Odisha was a part of Bengal during the British age and was under the control of Bengal. It then got bifurcated and became a province on its own by the year 1936. Since the independence of our country, the state has been ruled by the chief minister of the winning party and democratic elections are held every 5 years to elect the party which will rule the state. The state was primarily ruled by the Indian national congress until 2000 after which their local party Biju Janata Dal took over and has continued to rule the state. The post of Governor is appointed by the President of India.

Some of the well-known politicians of Odisha are listed below:

1. Naveen Patnaik

He is the current and the 14th chief minister of Odisha. He as of now is the longest-serving chief minister any state has ever had in India. He is a member of the Biju Janata Dal and has been the chief minister of Odisha since 2000. He is also the president of Biju Janata Dal. He is often criticized by the opposition as he is the only CM who does not have a strong grip on the language of the state that is Odia but still manages to run his government in the most efficient way possible. He has won several accolades which include one from the United Nations where he was facilitated due to the way he handled the Cyclone Phalin in Odisha and helped to cause minimal damage to the state. He was previously the minister of steel and mines under the government of India.

2. Biju Patnaik

He was the 3rd Chief Minister of the state and the father of the aforementioned Naveen Patnaik. He served as CM of the state twice during his life. He was elected first in the year 1956 as a member of the Indian National Congress. He was known to be an advisor of our first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He was a skilled aerospace engineer and an excellent pilot in his youth days. He was a strong and dynamic politician of Odisha with a zeal to change the conditions of his state. He also had a tuned knowledge in the field of military and was an unofficial defense advisor to Jawaharlal Nehru. He died in the year 1997.

3. Janaki Ballab Patnaik

He was the chief minister of Odisha for 9 years during his first term and again for 4 years during his second term, making him the longest-serving CM of Odisha at that time which was later overtaken by Naveen Patnaik. He was a great scholar and an excellent leader. A member of the Indian national congress, he also served as the governor of the state of Assam during his later years. He holds the legacy of translating our epics like Mahabharata, Ramayana, and the sacred Bhagavad Gita to Odia language. He died on 21st April 2015.

4. Harekrushna Mahatab

He was the first CM of the state of Odisha and a great politician of Odisha. He was an active member of the freedom struggle of our country and for that reason has been imprisoned a lot of times. He was a big reason for the shifting of the state’s capital from Cuttack to Bhubaneshwar. He was an active member of the Indian National Congress (INC) as well as governor of Bombay for a year. He left for the heavenly abode in the year 1987. On his 100th birth anniversary, the state issued a stamp with his face remembering the struggles for the upliftment of the state.

5. Nabakrushna Choudhuri

He was the second CM of the state and a freedom fighter who participated in almost all the movements that led to the independence of our country. He is referred to as Naba babu in the state. He played a key role in promoting the Odia language and making it one of the most used languages of the state and giving it the recognition it needs. He left politics in 1957. Since then he was sent on a lot of diplomatic missions by the government to solve issues. He was also a great scholar and politician of Odisha. He died due to a heart attack in the year 1983.

6. Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo

He was the last ruler of the state of Patna and Orissa (back then) during the final phases of the British regime. He later became the Chief Minister of the state from 1967 to 1971 as a member of the Swatantra party which he was the president of. He resigned from his post due to indifferences with the centre in 1971. He died in 1975.

7. Biswanath Das

He was the CM of the Odisha after the former left and resigned and he completed the tenure of the government. He was a lawyer by profession and played an important part in the independence of our country. He was previously the Prime minister of Odisha in 1936-37 and the governor of Uttar Pradesh from 1962 to 1967. He was a renowned politician of Odisha.

8. Sadashiv Tripathy

He was the CM of Orissa from 1965 to 1967. Previously he was elected consecutively 4 times in his presidency and served as a revenue minister for the state. He was a member of the Indian National Congress and died in the year 1980.

9. Hemananda Biswal

He was the CM of Orissa from 1990 to 1995 and again from 1999 to 2000 before Naveen Patnaik was elected as the CM. He comes from a tribal background and was the first tribal CM of the state. He was also a member of parliament and even worked as deputy Chief Minister of the state. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and a great politician of Odisha.

10. Tathagata Satapaty

He is a member of BJD and the main voice of the party in the Lok sabha. He is a journalist and editor by profession and was re-elected on his post during the recent Lok Sabha elections.

11. Nandini Sathapaty

She is the first and the only female CM of Orissa has ever had. She was elected in the year 1972 and continued in the post till the year 1976. She is an author by profession and her tenure collided in both the ends by president rule. She was a member of the Indian national congress and was an eminent politician of Odisha. She died in the year 2006.
