Every year India celebrates National Sports Day on 29 August. The birthday of Major Dhyanchand, the great sportsman of Indian sports history, is also celebrated on this day. This year’s Sports Day is special, as the Fit India Movement is starting today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch ‘Fit India Campaign‘ (Fit India Movement) on National Sports Day. Its purpose is to make people in the country health conscious. The program will begin at 10 am at the Indira Gandhi Stadium. Major Dhyanchand is said to be a wizard of hockey, having won gold medals for India in the Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936. Not only this, Major scored 400 goals in his 22-year career.

In honor of him, every year the Government of India celebrates August 29 as National Sports Day. On this day in Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President himself confers different sports honors (Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Dhyanchand Award) to different sportspersons from different fields of sports. Like every time, this time too, Sports Day will be celebrated in which President Ramnath Kovind will award 32 players from different sports.  Recently a committee was formed to advise the government on the Fit India movement. The committee included the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), National Sports Association (NSF), government officials, private bodies and renowned fitness personalities.
