Cabinet approves Birth Anniversary of Birsa Munda (15th November) as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas

The Narendra Modi government has decided to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sri Birsa Munda as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas. Birsa Munda belonged to the tribal society and made an invaluable contribution to the freedom struggle. Union Minister Anurag Thakur tweeted that “The Union Cabinet has approved the declaration of the birth anniversary of Lord Birsa Munda on November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas. To celebrate the glorious history of tribal people, culture and achievements, the week-long celebrations are planned from 15-22 November 2021.”

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today has approved the declaration of 15th November as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas dedicated to the memory of brave tribal freedom fighters so that coming generations could know about their sacrifices about the country. The date is the birth anniversary of Sri Birsa Munda who is revered as Bhagwan by tribal communities across the country, according to an official press release.

Introduction of Birsa Munda

Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 in a poor family in Ulihatu village of Khuti district of Jharkhand. The Mundas were a tribal group living in the Chota Nagpur plateau. His father’s name was Sugna Puriti and mother-Karmi Puriti. Birsa Munda studied at Chaibasa GEL Church School after his early studies in Salga village. His mind was always engaged in driving away from the British rulers from the country. Today, there are several organizations, bodies, and structures named after him, notably Birsa Munda Airport Ranchi, Birsa Institute of Technology Sindri, Birsa Munda Vanvasi Chattravas, Kanpur, Sidho Kanho Birsha University, Purulia, and Birsa Agricultural University.
