World water day 2020: Everyone has a Role to Play

Water– the most significant resource on earth is getting depleting every single day due to an increase in population. Increasing the population increased the demand for water, which in turn diminishes our natural resource. Thus to increase awareness and focus on the importance of freshwater in our lives, World Water Day is celebrated on22 March every year. The objective of world water day is to boost awareness about water-related issues like water scarcity, water pollution, impacts of climate change and sustainable management of freshwater resources.

World water day is celebrated since 1993. In 1992, the United Nations (UN) general passed a resolution to celebrate world water day on 22 March every year. This Day is an opportunity to learn more about water-related problems, to educate others and take action, to make a difference. Water is the building block of life and to promote economic, social and human growth of any nation.

World water day 2020 theme: Water and climate change

United Nations selects the theme for Water day every year in consultation with UN organizations. The theme for the year 2020 is ‘Water and climate change’ and how the two are closely linked. Climate change has a direct effect on the availability, quality, and quantity of water resources. Climate change also alters the water cycle and cause hindrances in energy production, food security, human health, and economic development.

The campaign gives a message that sustainable utilization of water will help reduce floods, droughts, scarcity, and pollution, and help fight global climate change. By adapting to the water effects of climate change, we can protect health and save lives and, by using water more efficiently, we can reduce greenhouse gases. Taking into consideration the COVID-19 pandemic this year world water day also highlights guidance on handwashing and hygiene.
