Kazakhstan’s literacy rate is around 99% and that’s because of mandatory education. The grade of primary school starts from the age of 6 and the schools run in 2 shifts morning and afternoon. Children have to attend at different times to share the facilities. The syllabus is decided by the Ministry of Education and the same is applied to both public and private schools. Middle education in Kazakhstan is up to grade 9 and takes 4 years to complete. Depending upon the location of the school, the general curriculum includes Russian or Kazakh along with other main subjects biology, history, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and foreign language.

Secondary education is of 3 years and there are 3 courses one can choose to pursue. The first option is general education at Icyeum or gymnasium, the second is vocational education at vocational school and the last one is professional education at colleges. Most of the educational cost is bear by the state. For higher education, there are universities and colleges.  

Kazakhstan constitution makes it mandatory to have education for children till secondary school education. Currently, about 5% of the students are enrolled in private schools which are increasing with time but private institutions are under the strict supervision of the state.

There are around 150 universities in Kazakhstan and in this article top, 10 universities are included which have made their way in the world rankings and on the number of students and quality of education provided by the institutes. The top 10 universities of Kazakhstan mentioned here are the ones that provide master’s degrees or doctorate in specialized subjects. Below is the list of 10 universities but we do not claim that these are the best. This list is made to guide you in your search for finding better education in Kazakhstan.

Al Farabi Kazakh National University

In the republic of Kazakhstan, this university is very esteemed in providing higher education.  Al Farabi Kazakh National University was the first to get the certificate from the government to run academic courses at all levels for various specialized courses. Al Farabi Kazakh is one of the top universities of Kazakhstan. It set a record by becoming the first university to get the presidential award of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of quality and service. Kazakh national university is also a member of the International Association of universities. This university is the first among the education institutes of Kazakhstan to get the certification of SQM (System of Quality Management), a requirement to meet international standards. Al Farabi University also has many certifications from the largest global center for certifications IQNET.

There is a total of 16 faculties in which 67 different departments and 32 scientific research institutes are there. The university has more than 18000 students and a staff of around 2000 teachers.

Nazarbayev University

ENU is in the possession of the prestigious international medal “United Europe”, and the golden star “The CIS Best Company”. The association of Engineering Education of Russia accredited 6 courses of engineering. ENU has acquired 1st rank according to the independent quality assurance agency of Kazakhstan. ENU is one of the universities of Kazakhstan which made its way into the world’s top 400 universities. Karaganda State Technical University

In the 1950s, demand for coal and other minerals increased on an alarming basis due to a boost in production force after the war and at that time it was discovered that there are many large sources of raw metal deposits like iron, copper, and other ores are available in central Kazakhstan area. The main problem at that time was the non-availability of engineers specialized in metallurgy and mining. To solve this problem USSR at that time decided to open a mining institution in the area, then in 1953 council of ministers of the USSR issued a decree in the name of the government to develop the institute to further improving the training of engineers and developing the field in Karaganda Prem and Tula region.

This institute was a major achievement not only for Karaganda but for the whole of Kazakhstan. With the help of local authorities, these institutes developed with time, and accommodation was added. The first director of Karaganda institute was Ph.D. Yunus who also worked at Moscow mining institute and also a mining engineer graduated in 1934. When this institute started in 1953, there were only two courses mining electrical engineering and development of mineral deposits.

Now university operates 9 faculties mining, mechanical, road and transport, architecture, computer, management, telecommunications, power engineering and automation, and civil. Specialist courses are provided in 46 different areas, postgraduate courses in 29 fields, and doctorate degrees in 8 areas.

KTU has many technical accreditations from various national and international organizations. This university has 7 academic buildings and the largest library in central Kazakhstan. This university has more than 100 agreements with international universities and many international organizations of countries like Germany, England, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Italy, Czech, and many others.   

Kazakh National Medical University

In Alma Ata, a medical institute was opened in 1930 by the decree of the council of people Commissars. Sanzhar a graduate from a military academy in St Petersburg was appointed as the first director of this institute. This institute was started with 5 professors, 4 associate professors, 13 assistants, and 2 teachers. In 1938, a branch of this institute was opened pediatric faculty as a measure to counter the acute shortage of pediatric doctors in the country. In the war period, more than 2000 students graduated from this institute and around 1500 joined the war and participated at the war front.

With time many other faculties were also added to this institute and in 2001 with the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan this institute was given the name and status of the university and its name changed to Kazakh National Medical University. In 89 years, this university has graduated more than 80000 doctors and is the source of public health. According to a survey every third doctor serving in Kazakhstan is graduated from KazNMU. This university of Kazakhstan is a milestone in the fields of medicine and hygiene in Kazakhstan and its students and teachers are proud members of this prestigious institute. More than 2000 students graduated from this institute every year in various fields.

Karaganda State University

This is the second university established in Kazakhstan and also one of the largest in the area. Karaganda state university is famous for maintaining its character in the field of higher education and primary in the fields of science and culture in Kazakhstan. Established in 1972 by the recognition of the ministry of education and science, around 15000 students study in this institute. Admission to this university is only provided after the admission test. With several academic and non-academic facilities, like exchange programs, libraries, sports complexes, and administrative services, the university is in partnership with many foreign and public universities of the world. Karaganda state university is part of the exchange programs for the students who wish to study abroad.

S Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University

Toraighyrov University is the largest university in the Pavlodar region and one of the best centers to study science and culture in whole Kazakhstan. Founded in 1960 by the decree issued by the council of ministers of the USSR and was started in military barracks of ex-military schools. About 400 students were enlisted to study three different fields of engineering mechanical, civil, and power engineering. With its service in the field of education for the last half-century, this university has now developed into a pioneer institute of highly professional staff and innovative and multi-functional university in Kazakhstan.

 TU also works with local administration and started a program “Strong University – Strong Region”. The university is famous for providing higher education in 150 fields in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. There are 28 different departments and 5 research centers. The main areas of research are in the fields of energy-saving technologies, metallurgy, construction, engineering, and the environment. The university has a transfer program to provide practical learning for its students and is in collaboration with some big names like ERG group, petrochemical plants, electrolysis, and Aluminum plants. TU also secure its rank in the world’s top 1000 universities. Toraighyrov university is a member of IAESTE (the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience).

Satbayev University

In the Republic of Kazakhstan, this university is the flagship of engineering education and is deeply connected with the culture and history of the state. In the 1930s there was a shortage of skilled technical people in the field of metal and mining and it is considered as the reason for the economic backwardness of Kazakhstan. So, the Kazakh mining and metallurgical institute were established in Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan at that time. In starting there are two faculties one was metallurgical and other nonferrous metals. The university was officially started in 1934. In the development of practical and scientific activities in the fields of mining, geology, and metallurgy, the institute was formed on the basis of scientific principles and made a huge contribution to the development of ore resources in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the development of new technologies in the field of mining and metallurgy.

Semey Medical University

This university of Kazakhstan was first started in September of 1953 with a single medical faculty with about 300 students. In all these years more than 25000 students got graduated from this university and are working successfully in-country and abroad. In past years this university is continuously developing its potential in the field of science and technology. In 2009 this institute was given the rank of the university and become known throughout the country. Currently, the university has more than 1500 teaching staff. International students from India, China, Pakistan, Mongolia, and Russia came here to study.

Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University 

In 1928 Kazakh national pedagogical university in Kazakhstan was established and is now the largest university in Kazakhstan and center of science and culture. Quality of education gets this university first place in pedagogical studies. This university paves a strong path in the development of Kazakhstan and strengthens Kazakhstan’s position in the field of and political sciences.
