The holiest and sacred place of worship for Muslims is considered to be the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. Ajmer Sharif Dargah is the tomb of Moin-ud-din-Chishti situated in the Ajmer city of state Rajasthan. Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti was a great Sufi Saint who dedicated his whole life for the betterment of poor people that’s why he was popularly known as ‘Gharib Nawaz’ (protector of the poor). As he sacrificed his life for the poor, his holy place is also known as Khawaja Gharib Nawaz or Ajmer Sharif. The shrine Ajmer Sharif is visited by millions of pilgrims every year which includes not only Muslims but people from every religion.

Legends said Hazrat Khwaja Moin-Ud-Din Chisti was known to be the founder of Islam in India. He came to India from Persia and stayed in Lahore for a short span of time after which he finally settled in the city of Ajmer. He was widely known for his social activities.

The devotees of Ajmer Sharif Dargah believed that every wish made with a pure heart at the Dargah is fulfilled. The Dargah is blessed because, in the last days of his life, Sufi Saint Moin-Ud-Din Chisti locked himself in a room for six days for praying god and left his body in solitude. A special fest is also organized on this beautiful occasion called ‘Urs, for six days in the Dargah in the seventh month of the Islamic lunar calendar. In this Urs, people from all over the country came here.

The Ajmer Sharif is an excellent example of Mughal architecture which has a giant entrance called Buland Darwaza, which opens into the dome-shaped chamber, the grave of the great Sufi saint, Hazrat Khwaja Moin-Ud-Din Chisti guarded by a silver railing and marble screen. The major attraction in Dargah is the two big cauldrons having the capacity in thousands which are used to make sweets during Urs.

The Urs fest or fair is organized during the month of October to March and this would be considered as the best time to visit the Dargah Ajmer Sharif. A traveler will get to see the spectacularly decorated shrine during this fair.

How to reach the Ajmer Sharif Dargah

From every city of Rajasthan, bus and rail services are well connected to the Ajmer city and Ajmer Sharif Dargah is located at a small distance from Ajmer Town. So it is quite easily accessible from everywhere.
