To observe the birth and death anniversary of famous poet William Shakespeare, the UN (United Nations) celebrates World English Language Day on April 23 every year. English is one of the working languages along with French at the United Nations Secretariat and is among one of the organization’s six official languages. The other six official languages are Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.

The first language day was initiated in the year 2010 with the efforts of the Department of Public Information. Language days are celebrated for all the six official languages to promote equal use of all languages and to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well.

The English language has become so strong that it is now considered the Lingua Franca of the entire world, bringing together all of us for trade and communication, and serving almost every nation as the necessary second language. English has become the official language of nearly 60 countries around the world, and it seems to be gaining power every year.

While the English language is uniform but the difference in spelling and dialect or accent are the factors that differentiate among the types of English languages. The common types of English languages or dialects around the world are:

1. British English

2. American English

3. Australian English

4. Canadian English

5. Indian English

6. Philippine English

7. Ugandan English
