Heart disease is a medical condition for which age is not a limit for occurrence. It is equally fatal and tragic in children as in adults. There are many types of heart problems that can affect the children but thanks to our cardiologists and advanced technologies that help these tiny tots to live their life without any problem.

5 types of Heart disease in children can be:

1. Congenital Heart Disease: If a child born with some heart defect, it is called congenital heart disease. There are some conditions of the heart that come under congenital heart disease like holes in the heart, heart valve disorders, underdeveloped heart. These congenital heart diseases are usually treated with surgery, medication, or heart transplant.

2. Arrhythmias: Arrhythmias is a condition in which children have an irregular heartbeat or abnormal heart rhythm. This heart defect is associated with fast Heart rate (Supraventricular Tachycardia), slow Heart rate (bradycardia), Long QT syndrome (a heart condition that can cause fast, chaotic heartbeats that might trigger a sudden fainting spell or seizure).

3. Kawasaki Disease: In this, children get swelling (inflammation) in the walls of medium-sized arteries throughout the body. This inflammation tends to affect the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. Children having high fever and peeling skin can be symptomatic for Kawasaki disease.

Do you think your diet plan or food that you eat has any effect on the blood pressure? There are certain foods that may increase or decrease blood pressure. Dr. Dinesh Sehgal, Interventional Cardiologist at Sapra Multispecialty hospital, Hisar suggests the relationship between diet and blood pressure.

Good Diet and Bad Diet have an equal effect on Heart. A bad diet can lead to Heart Disease or high blood pressure. A diet rich in Sugar, Salt, Fats is termed as Bad diet. Improving your diet reduces your risk of heart disease in many ways, including helping lower levels of high cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar and insulin, as well as preventing obesity and improving your heart and blood vessel function.

There are some foods that you must not eat or eat in limits to keep your heart healthy strong.

1. Refined and processed grains and carbohydrates: Refined or processed foods like white bread, white rice, low-fiber breakfast cereals, sweets, and sugars are not good for cardiac health. They are not good as refinement or processing removes the natural structure of the food. Processing of any food often adds many ingredients that are less healthy, particularly trans fats, sodium, and sugars. Thus, eat refined or processed food occasionally.

2. Drinks: Soda and sugary drinks: Like refined and processed food, soft drinks also have an ill effect on heart health. In addition, to affect heart rate and blood pressure, soft drinks increases the bodyweight too.

3. Red Meat / processed Meat: Bacon, Chicken, sausage, red meat, or pork can raise your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or bad cholesterol, and increases your chance of a heart attack or stroke. They are full of salt, which bumps up your blood pressure and makes your heart work harder. High amounts of sodium can lead to stroke, heart disease, and heart failure.

4. Foods undergo deep-frying: French fries, fried chicken and fried snacks increased the risk of heart disease. Frying creates trans fats, a type of fat that can raise the bad type of cholesterol and lower the good cholesterol.

5. Cookies, cakes, and muffins that are called baked food should be taken on less quantity. They’re loaded with added sugar, which leads to weight gain and can also lead to heart disease. White flour is the main ingredient that may spike blood sugar levels and in turn, increase blood pressure.

6. Drinking alcohol can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure, strokes, and weight gain. So if you don’t already drink, don’t start.

These are some of the foods that constitute a bad diet and avoiding this diet can save you from a heart attack and high blood pressure. Eat nutritional diet including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, cut salt and sugar intake for a healthy life. Include 30-minute exercise in your daily routine.

Do you have a heart problem of decreasing heart rate or bradycardia. If yes, then this problem will affect the electrical system of the heart by damaging the heart muscles. The normal heart rate is 60–90 times a minute. At the same time, the heart of people suffering from bradycardia beats 35–40 times in a minute. While in some cases low heart rate is considered normal. Our expert Dr. Dinesh Sehgal (Interventional cardiologist & Director, Cardiology, Sapra Multispecialty Hospital, Hisar) is explaining the common causes of bradycardia.

1. Sinus bradycardia- In this AV node impedes the functioning of electrical impulse i.e. pumping blood. Because of this, the heart rate decreases to 45 beats per minute. In this situation electrical signals pass through the upper part of the heart. But due to the damage done to AV node, there is no beating in the lower part of the heart. Because of this, the speed of the beat gets interrupted.

2. AV node disease – If your AV node is not working at all but the upper chamber or upper chest has a normal heart rate, that is, your heart beats 80 times every minute. While in the lower chamber your heart beats 40 times a minute. So this means that your overall heart rate is low. Similarly, if there is any damage to the AV node, then your heart rate decreases despite being able to beat the muscles of the lower chamber.

3. Complete heart block – In this condition there can be any problem ranging from damage to heart muscle to blockage in the arteries due to coronary problems or heart attack. In some cases, the lower chamber of the heart is not able to beat properly due to a problem in AV node. This can also result in complete heart block, which can be dangerous.

4. Hypothyroidism – Decreased levels of thyroid cause bradycardia whereas increased levels of thyroid leads to tachycardia (increase in Heart Beat). It makes the lower chamber beats 40 – 50 times per minute due to the pressure of thyroid hormones on the cyanus node. The treatment of bradycardia in this condition depends on the method of treatment for hypothyroidism.

5. Any Heart disorder present at birth (congenital heart defect) can also cause bradycardia.

6. Medications, including some drugs for other heart rhythm disorders, high blood pressure and psychosis can also reduce the heart rate.

Cola Drinks: Sodas and juices aren’t good for us. The link between increased sugar in our diets and heart disease, diabetes and stroke is strong.

Red meat and processed foods: This kind of foods contain saturated fats that can increase cholesterol and risk for heart disease and stroke.

There is a strong connection between heart health and diet. Heart illness, stroke, and diabetes fatalities were attributed to diet. Modifying our diets will make it easier for us to have a healthy heart.

Obesity is a body disorder in which fats gets accumulated under the human body. It increases the risk of diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. In a recent study it is observed that when BMI (Body Mass Index) fat mass of a person increases, the risk of heart issues also increases.

Here are some ways in which obesity contributes to heart disease – and what you can do to take control of your health and combat not only obesity but heart disease too!

It can cause a rise in your blood pressure level. The individuals who are obese require more blood to supply oxygen and nutrients to their bodies which causes an increase in blood pressure. Increase in blood pressure is a common cause of heart attack.

Obesity can change your cholesterol levels. It lowers good high-density lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is important for removing bad cholesterol and working to reduce the risk of heart disease.

It can also lead to Diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, at least 68 percent of people aged 65 or older with diabetes also have heart disease. Thus Diabetes is also one of the major factors of Heart-related problems.

To reduce the risk of Heart disease, a person should be fit and fine with no extra fats in the body. A person can follow some steps to lower the weight can be:

Exercise daily to reduce body fat. This is the main and foremost step that an obese person should follow to stay healthy.

Decrease salt and sugar intake.

Stress can have also many effects on the body and mind. Stress leads to change in eating patterns and person started craving for High- calorie foods. Eating too many high-calorie foods can contribute to the risk of Heart Diseases.

Every 30 sec, an individual dies from heart problem. Congestive Heart Failure means the heart muscle cannot pump blood around the body properly which makes body cells to get deprived of essential nutrients and oxygen. This leads to tiredness, numbness and inefficiency in doing daily tasks.

There are many
reasons which cause damage to the heart muscle:

Heart attack: Due to sudden blockage in coronary artery, heart pumping efficiency gets affected.

High blood Pressure: Blood pressure is the force that blood pushes to the walls of the arteries. High pressure will eventually weaken the heart muscle and its pumping efficiency.

Diabetes can cause damage to heart muscle due to high blood sugar level

Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism

Myocarditis: Inflammation of heart muscle caused by virus also causes heart failure.

Pic Credit: Google

Types of heart
failure are:

Left side Heart
failure: This is the most common form of heart failure. From the left side
of the heart, blood goes to all the parts of body. When muscle is not working
properly, then blood backs up into the lungs and not effectively pumped.

Right Side Heart
failure: This failure occurs due to left side heart failure as fluid occurs
to build up in lungs in left side failure. The working of right side heart is
to pump blood to the lungs for oxygenation.

Diastolic Heart
failure: This is also known as diastolic dysfunction. When heart muscle
becomes stiff, it can’t pump blood effectively.

Systolic Heart failure: when heart size is abnormal, then it fills improperly with blood causes no pumping or less flow of blood to the other parts of the body.

Pic credit: Google

If any person feel
congested lungs, shortness in breath, fluid retention, swollen legs, increased
weight, fatigue, tiredness, inability to do daily chores and fast heart beat,
then they should immediately consult a cardiologist and ask for an evaluation
of their heart.

Heart Attack occurs in an individual when a blood vessel carrying blood to the heart, becomes obstructed. Now a days the major cause of death is Heart attack. Heart disease can be a life changing event. If appropriate care is taken, most people not only recover from an event but go on to improve their quality of life to a higher level than before.

For those who survive after heart attack, the prevention of subsequent coronary events and the maintenance of physical functioning are the major challenges. Cardiac rehabilitation programs are recognized as integral to the comprehensive care of patients with heart attack said Dr. Dinesh Sehgal leading cardiologist (Sapra Multispeciality Hospital, hisar)

Follow below tips for healthy heart

• Physical activity/Exercise is recommended /prescribed for patients with heart attack.

• 20- 60 minutes of Walking, running, cycling or swimming, etc. 3-5 days per week, 8-10 different exercises for both upper and lower body, 2-3 days per week.

Pic Credit: Google

• Monitor for abnormal signs and symptoms, i.e., chest pain, dizziness, and dysrhythmias as exercise may precipitate cardiovascular complications in heart attack patients.

• Patients with stable angina (Chest Pain) should always carry nitroglycerin and be educated in its use.

There can be individual variations in diet, but in general
50-60% calories come from carbohydrates like whole grains, peas, beans
etc. 20-30% from fats like beef, lamb,
dairy foods etc,15-20% from proteins Like fish, nuts, poultry etc. Meal should
contain one portion of protein, two portions of grains and three portions of
vegetables.

Avoid consumption of margarine, oily or fried foods, red meat, sweet preparations like cakes, (remove) pastries, margarine and carbonated drinks. Foods high in magnesium helps to protect heart, include foods such as broccoli, potatoes, spinach, and wheat germ.

• Include servings of fresh fruits and vegetables in a diet.

Pic credit: Google

• Decrease salt and sugar intake, Stop smoking and decrease intake of alcohol.

• keep a check on blood sugar and blood pressure value.

Here is how quickly we can get on with our day to day work

• Patient can start driving after 6 to 8 weeks

• Patient can resume to work after 4 to 6 weeks after myocardial infarction.

Continue your medications as prescribed by your doctor.

In a bypass surgery, a new artery is connected to the coronary
artery below the area of blockage. A detour is created around the blockage, but
the blockage is not removed. The new artery is called a Bypass graft. After
surgery, it is important to get mobile and physically active as soon as
possible. Prolonged bed rest may be detrimental. Dr. Dinesh Sehgal ( Leading
Cardiologist, Sapra Multispecialty Hospital, Hisar) suggestes cardiac rehab is
an integral art of post-surgery care, and will help you recover quickly and
safely. You should be able to resume a healthy life within six to eight week of
surgery.
