Marine Life: Important for Human development

Environment as we know includes our surroundings that affect our ability to survive on earth and it includes air, water, flora, fauna and much more. Air and water are universal but flora and fauna has huge diversity. From tiny birds of the air to huge whales of the ocean, all includes wildlife. Whether it is a land plant or a water animal, they have an equal effect on the human development. Thus, it is our prime responsibility to conserve the varied flora and fauna to maintain balance in the environment.

To protect the endangered species of the world, UN declared that each year 3rd March will be celebrated as World Wildlife day to keep people aware of the changing nature of our world, and the treasures we have. It is a day to celebrate the variety of flora and fauna and the steps we should take to conserve our wildlife. World Wildlife Day 2019 theme is “Life below water: for people and planet”, which aligns with goal 14 of UN Sustainable Development Goals. Marine ecosystem is the most biodiversed ecosystem on the earth. Over three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. It provides food and nourishment to material for construction and handicrafts. But due to severe human intervention, our marine life is under threat. Over exploitation of marine species  pollution, loss of coastal habitats and climate change are the factors for destruction of water bodies and biological community under them. So today is an opportunity to pledge for safeguarding our marine life and protecting it for our better future.
