Jaisalmer: Land of Golden Sand Dunes

The city that is the heart of the Great Indian Thar desert, Jaisalmer, better known as Golden city of Rajasthan for its sandcastles, Havelis, forts, camel ride, beautiful Jain temples, and adventure activities.

It is Rajasthan’s one of the biggest tourist attraction because of the breathtaking view of Jaisalmer fort. It is a massive sandcastle rising from the desert becomes the city’s focal point. Popularly known as Sonar Qila or Golden Fort, it was built in 1156 by Rajput ruler Jaisal.  The fort is termed as one of the few living forts of the world as thousands of people live inside the fort. The hotels, shops, temples, and home make it a small town. From the top of the fort, the enthralling view of the city can be seen.

Inside the fort, the seven interconnected series of Jain temples are must a visit point for tourists. They are ancient, spiritual, and artistic in nature built during the 12th and 15th centuries. Dedicated to the Tirthankars Rishabhdev, Paraswanath, Chandraprabhu, Shitalnath, Kunthunath, and Shantinat. All seven temples are built using the same golden-yellow Jaisalmer stone and exquisite carvings on the walls.

To witness the day-to-day life of rural people, a camel safari can be one of the extraordinary experiences for travellers. Camel safari will give you mesmerizing views of the setting Sun during the evenings, Cultural performances and staying overnight in one of the several tent resorts near the dunes can give you the feel of Arabian nights.

Gadisarlake, an artificial reservoir for the water supply to the town until 1965 is now a tourist place where boating and relaxing can be done.  Located close to the fort of Jaisalmer, it relieves from the dry climate.

The best time to visit Jaisalmer is from November to March as this the time when the temperature is not very high and tourists can enjoy sand dunes and other activities.
