Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh has made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at the age of 18 years. This incredible achievement came after a thrilling 14-game match against reigning champion Ding Liren from China, held in Singapore. Gukesh secured the title with a dramatic victory in the final game, ending the match with a score of 7.5 to 6.5.

The chess championship match was a true test of skill and endurance, lasting three weeks and pushing both players to their limits. Gukesh’s journey to victory was filled with intense moments, including a crucial win in Game 11, where he took a vital 6-5 lead. 

In Game 14, with both players tied at 6.5 points each, Gukesh capitalized on a critical blunder by Ding Liren , who misplayed what appeared to be a comfortable position. This pivotal moment allowed Gukesh to secure his victory and make history as the youngest world champion, surpassing Garry Kasparov’s long-standing record set in 1985 when Kasparov won at age 22.

After his victory, Gukesh was overwhelmed with emotion, bursting into tears as he celebrated his dream come true. “Since I started playing chess, I have been dreaming about this moment,” he said, expressing gratitude for the support he received along his journey.

Following his historic win, congratulations poured in from around the world. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt wishes to Gukesh, commending him for bringing pride to India and reinforcing its reputation as a chess powerhouse.

Other Achievements 

D Gukesh is India’s youngest grandmaster and previously made headlines by becoming the youngest-ever winner of the Candidates Tournament, which earned him a shot at the World Championship. Additionally, he was the first Indian player to dethrone Viswanathan Anand’s 36-year reign as the top-ranked Indian player.
