Mechanical engineering is considered as the mother branch of engineering. This branch of engineering offers a combination of engineering physics and mathematics principles combined with designing, analyzing, manufacturing, and maintaining mechanical structures like machines, tools, and engines. Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and wide-ranging branches of engineering.

What is mechanical engineering?

In simple terms, mechanical engineering is the study of motion, force, and energy. A mechanical engineer is responsible for creating technologies that meet human needs. A mechanical engineer works in the branches of research, development, designing, and has roots in the application of technologies.

It won’t be puffery if we categorize mechanical engineering as one of the safest braches for the career in engineering

MECHANICAL ENGINEERS works on the principle of “how to make things Works”! There are different fields in which mechanical engineers can work :

  • Manufacturing: mechanical engineers are responsible for the manufacturing of machines and instruments related to various industries such as the automotive industry, oil and gas industry, air conditioning and refrigerator industry, etc. Mechanical engineers basically involved in the industries that produce mass products.
  • Product designing: mechanical engineers are responsible for designing and monitoring of the product designed for various industries to suits the present requirement of the consumer.
  • Research and development: mechanical engineers also involve in the research and development of the products and services that satisfy the need of society. They may get involved in the research of pieces of equipment in armed forces, aerospace machinery, etc. 
  • System monitoring: mechanical engineers are responsible for the monitoring of large systems. Mechanical engineer works under section for airplanes, air conditioners, car engines, induction motors, transformers, and whatnot.

The main function of a mechanical engineer will be problem-solving, designing, manufacturing, and functioning of the various projects involving machines.

Engineering and diploma options for mechanical engineers

Diploma option after 10th standard

You can avail of two major options after 10th if it is clear in your mind to go for the profile of a mechanical engineer from the beginning.

There are diploma courses available which you can do after the 10th. The best part of doing any diploma course is that you do not have to go for 11th and 12th standard anymore and after the completion of the course the admission for engineering is direct through lateral entry.

Lateral entry students are directly passed to the second year of Btech (engineering degree which is of 4 years) and have to do only 3 years of Btech to get their graduation complete.

B.Tech option after 12th standard

If you are in your twelfth standard then availing a 4-year course into mechanical engineering is the only option you have in your hands. For getting entry into the B.tech colleges and universities, students have to give JEE (Joint entrance examination) and on the basis of their percentile and counseling, they get the admission.

Although the period for both the routes ( via diploma and direct engineering after school ) include the same no. of year investment.

There are integrated options available in the course as well, which includes B tech and M tech degree in one go. Nowadays, B.tech and MBA integrated courses are also something you can consider going for, as they ensure high package placement in return.

A 4-year course is mandatory to be called as a mechanical engineer. Although you can opt for the integrated programs that offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in 5 years, and go for the specialized course according to your interest in the field.
