Pregnancy is a time when you eat for you and your baby. It’s a time when your body needs more care and attention. It’s a very special gift to every woman from God, but this gift comes with many challenges. As this time a woman’s body undergoes several changes, she is carrying a new life into her womb and for that tiny bud to grow, she needs a healthy diet. Pregnant women should follow some nutritional diet tips for the proper growth and development of the body.

While talking about nutrition, it becomes confusing what should be eaten or whatnot. Due to a lack of proper knowledge pregnant ladies somehow can eat food that is not healthy. Before eating anything, it’s better to take a doctor’s advice, because there are some eatables that are very healthy for common people but may act as a toxin for pregnant women.

This article is basically about the fruits that you should avoid during your pregnancy. It will tell you the side effects of the various fruits that why you should not consume it during pregnancy.

1. Pineapple – Pineapple is a super healthy fruit but it should be avoided by pregnant women. Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain that softens the cervix (narrow end part of the uterus) and it may induce early labor. It has the potential to trigger uterine contractions. Hence pregnant ladies should avoid pineapple as it can cause other stomach problems like diarrhea and may also lead to dehydration.

2. Tamarind – Every pregnant woman wants to eat sour items like tamarind. Tamarind is a great source of vitamin C but an excess of tamarind causes harmful effects on pregnant women. Consuming too much tamarind or any other source of vitamin C in the first few months of pregnancy may lead to self-miscarriage or abortion. It reduces the production of progesterone. Hence excess of tamarind should be avoided as much as possible during pregnancy.

3. Papayas – Papaya is the worst fruit for pregnant women as it has many side effects. Papaya contains papain which may secrete prostaglandins (Lipid like substance sometimes used to induce labor). Like pineapple, papaya has also the potential to trigger the uterine contractions and can lead to early labor. It also weakens the vital membranes that support the fetus.

4. Bitter Melon – Bitter Melon contains many toxic components such as quinine, saponins glycosides, and morodicine. When the body absorbs these substances they cause nausea, rash, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Bitter melon is an irritating fruit for the uterus and can even lead to immature birth or miscarriage.

5. Frozen Berries – Fresh fruits are always good for health but choosing a frozen one is not a good idea. Frozen fruits lack nutrients and become toxic for both mother and her baby. So, pregnant women must eat only fresh berries instead of frozen berries.

6. Canned Tomatoes – Not only canned tomatoes but other canned food items should also be avoided by pregnant women. Canned food contains industrial chemicals and preservatives that act as a toxin for mother and baby. A chemical called bisphenol used to preserve the food in canned items may affect the child’s later life.

7. Grapes – Grapes are good nutritious fruit but have some bad effects on pregnant women. Grapes contain resveratrol which acts as a poison for expecting mothers. Especially black grapes are very harmful to the digestive system of pregnant ladies.

8. Peach – Peach is considered to be a hot fruit. Consuming more peach or any other hot food (that heats up the body) may lead to internal bleeding and even miscarriage. Peach’s peel contains tiny follicles that can cause irritation in the throat. Pregnant women can have this fruit in moderate quantity but it will be much better if they avoid this fruit.

9. Banana – Bananas are actually good for pregnant ladies but it’s advised to consult your doctor before eating bananas. Especially those who are allergic or suffering from gestational diabetes should avoid eating bananas because chitinase present in them can cause the latex-fruit syndrome. Also if you are eating bananas make sure it’s fresh, avoid overripe, and under-ripe bananas.

10. Watermelon – Watermelon is generally considered safe to eat during pregnancy as it flushes out the harmful toxic elements from the body. However, the fruit has high carbs and less fiber content hence increases the blood sugar level in women with gestational diabetes or if she is having pre-existing diabetes. Thus, eat watermelon but in a moderate amount.

Everything in this world has two sides. These fruits that must be avoided during pregnancy are not totally harmful, they have benefits too and are taken by pregnant women but in moderate amount to avoid complications. One important thing that you must ensure that the fruit you are eating is fresh, washed, and chemical-free.
