International Day for Biological Diversity: Our solutions are in Nature

After International Day of cultural diversity i.e May 22, is celebrated as International Day for Biological Diversity. Biological Diversity is referred to as the variety of biological species living on the earth. Biological diversity includes minute microorganisms to plants and animals.

The International Day for Biodiversity is an UN-sanctioned awareness day. The day for biological diversity commemorates the importance of biodiversity for humanity. Human civilizations are based on biodiversity. It is estimated that over 80 percent of the human diet is provided by plants and people living in rural areas rely on traditional plant‐based medicines for basic healthcare. Thus, to increase the public interest in preserving biodiversity, the UN started May 22 as International Day for Biodiversity. Biological diversity is a global asset to future generations but the number of species is being significantly reduced by certain human activities.

Loss of Biodiversity is a loss to mankind as it has been proven that biodiversity loss could expand zoonoses – diseases transmitted from animals to humans– while, on the other hand, if we keep biodiversity intact, it offers excellent tools to fight against pandemics like those caused by coronaviruses.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2020 Theme: Our solutions are in nature

International Day for Biological diversity

The theme for 2020 International Day for Biological Diversity is “our solutions are in Nature”. The motive behind keeping this theme is that despite being so advanced in technology, we human beings are dependent on various ecosystems for our health, water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter, and energy. The slogan “Our solutions are in nature” provides an opportunity to rethink and realize the importance of nature in future life.

2020 is a year of reflection, opportunity, and solutions. It is expected, from each of us, that we will “Build Back Better” by using this time to increase the resilience of nations and communities as we recover from this pandemic. 2020 is the year when, more than ever, the world can signal a strong will for a global framework that will “bend the curve” on biodiversity loss for the benefit of humans and all life on Earth.
