Two main pilgrim centres in Uttarakhand are Badrinath and Kedarnath. It is located in the Rudraprayag district. Every year lakhs of pilgrims come to worship in this temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.  There are many stories related to this temple. According to the legend, Pandavas built this temple. Pandavas were very desperate and filled with self-gratification because of killing their brothers in the war. They wanted to meet Lord Shiva so that they could get a path of liberation. But Lord Shiva was not happy with Pandavas because of Mahabharata’s war and did not want to meet them that’s why Lord Shiva took the form of a bull. And when he was founded by the Pandavas, he went further into the earth leaving the hump on the surface.

As it is situated in the mountains at a very high altitude, so the temple opens in the mid of April to November only when the temperature is favorable. It is one of the 12 Jyotirling. Among the devotees, this temple has a lot of importance. The month of October is considered the best to visit the Kedarnath Temple.

To the north of the Yamuna lies Bandarpooch mountain which is believed to be the place where Lord hanuman quenched his tail’s fire after burning the Lanka. Near the river source, the Yamunotri temple is situated dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. The goddess Yamuna resides in a temple in a black marble idol. It is a sacred place like the Gangotri temple. The temple remains closed during winters after Diwali till Akshaya Tritiya in April-May. 

A small hot water spring known as Surya Kund is there near the Yamuna river where devotees boil rice and potatoes tied in a muslin cloth.  Near Surya Kund, there is a Shila called Divya Shila, which is worshipped before puja is offered to the deity. Rice and potatoes made at Surya Kund offer at the shrine and rest taken as Prasad.

For photography enthusiasts, the environment of the place is best. The scenic beauty, snow-covered mountains, flora, and fauna attract tourists. For adventure seekers, camping and trekking can be done at Yamunotri.

The best time to visit this holy place is from May to November avoiding the monsoon season as it can be a risky affair due to landslides. The Yamunotri is easily accessible through all means of transport from Rishikesh and Dehradun.

Situated at a height of 3042m, Gangotri is a highly pious and sacred place for Hindus. There are no words that can describe the beauty and sanctity of the place. Snow clad mountains and clear water of  Ganga flowing around make the place more serene and peaceful. The aura of the Gangotri is unimaginable, devotees can feel the presence of god there.

Gangotri temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga is the most important shrine for the devotees traveling to Gangotri. The nearby places that attract tourists from all over are Tapovan, Bhairon Ghati, Submerged Shivling, Gaumukh Glacier, Harsil, etc

Gangotri temple remains closed for 6 months in a year due to harsh weather conditions. It gets open in the April-May and gets closed after Diwali festival.

To reach Gangotri, people can have all the means of transport. It is well connected through road, rail, and airways. Jolly Grant Airport and Rishikesh are the nearest airport and railway station respectively to the Gangotri. From here, Gangotri can be reached through road.
