Muscle knots are sensitive bump-like areas of muscles that cause pain in touching. In medical terms, they are also known as Myofascial trigger points. When the muscle fibers and tissue band called fascia get tense and hard, muscle knots formed. These trigger points can be developed in any part of the body but usually found in your back, shoulders, neck, and Hip area. You can feel the swollen and tight bump when you press a muscle knot. They’re sensitive to touch.

What causes muscle knots to form?

These trigger points in muscle can be formed due to factors like stress, anxiety, injuries, sedentary lifestyle (No stretching and movement), Unhealthy eating habits, overtiredness, and dehydration.

Common symptoms of Muscle knots

If you’re suffering from muscle knots, you will experience symptoms like muscle pain, muscle tightness, poor muscle strength and performance, fatigue, and stress.

Home Treatment options for Muscle Knots

Muscle knots or myofascial trigger points can be treated with simple home remedies. Professional doctors or orthopedics treatment is necessary only when there is no benefit seen by home remedies.

Follow some of the home remedies to get rid of the muscle knots

1. Give rest to the body from certain activities that seem to cause muscle knots. If you’re having a sedentary lifestyle, take a break from that and give relaxation to the body.

2. Doing body stretching can help release the tension from the body and reduce your chances of developing muscle knots. Be gentle with yourself as you stretch. Don’t do something that causes pain.

stretching

3. Physical exercises are always recommended by orthopedicians in joint pain and muscle pain. To get relief from muscle knot, aerobic exercises should be done. This will increase the blood supply and loosens the muscle fibers.

4. Applying a heating pad or ice pack to the affected area can also alleviate the pain and inflammation. Cold therapy helps to constrict the blood vessel, which reduces swelling whereas Heat pad relaxes and loosens stiff muscles, and relieves pain.

Heat/Ice pack

5. You can self massage the trigger points with gentle hands. Apply steady pressure on the point for a few seconds and release, will help to loosen tight muscle fibers.

Self Massage trigger Points

You can also prevent the formation of muscle knots just by following good sitting posture and maintain an active lifestyle that would include physical exercise and healthy eating habits. Your diet must contain calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and you should keep your body hydrated by drinking enough water.

Also, if by doing home remedies you are not getting relief from myofascial trigger points, do consult a doctor, physical therapist, or orthopedist to check the root cause of the pain as sometimes, swollen lymph nodes also misunderstood as muscle knots.

With Coronavirus (COVID19) entry in India, the corona infected patients are increasing day by day. The Healthcare system has informed to postpone all other important surgeries amidst the corona. They have instructed to set aside beds, prepare isolation facilities, procure ventilators, and manpower to combat the COVID-19.

A small survey finds that it is not only hospitals or doctors that postponing the major surgeries but some patients are canceling elective procedures because of the outbreak. Many doctors say they are seeing patients canceling or deferring procedures because of Corona’s fear.

So, to know the reason behind postponing surgeries and not visiting doctors during Corona, Jugaadin News has Dr. Amit Saini at its Talk @Jugaadin News. Dr. Amit Saini is a leading orthopedician at Sapra Multispeciality Hospital, Hisar. While addressing he says that the cancellation of procedures so far has been minimal, but with spreading viruses more patients are changing their plans to stop the spread of coronavirus.

If I talk about ortho surgeries like knee replacement, hip replacement, carpal tunnel surgeries patients who had scheduled their surgeries are now postponing procedures to avoid exposure to Corona. Patients are likely to see healthcare facilities as high-risk areas for exposure to infectious coronavirus. Though they are taking the right step during quarantine time, but they should follow some precautions so as not to come across any emergency.

Patients who have postponed their surgeries should always be in contact with the concerned doctor through telephonic or Messenger. If they see any emergency or medical condition, they should consult the medical practitioner as early as possible. They must have enough stock of prescribed medications with them. They should take all the precautionary measures against corona. There is no need to panic if surgery gets delayed by 5 to10 days said Dr. Amit saini.

We as Health care providers are delaying elective care to keep beds open and to prevent patients from contracting a new coronavirus, but this does not mean that patients should be cut off from life-saving treatment if needed.

When we overuse any muscle or ligament, it underwent strain which causes pain. At the top of the thigh and pelvic region, flexible muscle tissues are located called Hip Flexors. Hip flexors help in bending and flexing of knees. When these muscles undergo overstretching and overuse, hip flexors strain to occur. Hip flexor strain can be quite painful when left untreated. This is a common orthopedic condition but requires an orthopedician consultation and treatment on time.

Typically, this orthopedic injury occurs when too much use of the hip flexor muscles and tendons causes stretching or tearing. Cyclists, Dancers, Football players, martial arts players are active people who may be at a higher risk to hip flexor strains than others.

The severity of Hip Flexor strains are divided into 3
grades:

Grade 1: In this, Hip generally works normally but small tear damages a few fibers.

Grade 2: In this, mild pain occurs during walking and sitting as several muscle fibers are damaged.

Grade 3: In this, the complete damage to Hip is there which makes impossible to walk, sit and doing daily chores.

Grades of Hip Flexor Strain

HIP FLEXOR STRAIN SYMPTOMS:

According to Dr. Amit Saini, Orthopedician at Sapra Multispecialty Hospital Hisar, the various symptoms that a Hip flexor strain can cause are:

Pain in Hip and Pelvis

Pain during walking and climbing stairs

Muscle cramps

Swelling and inflammation in Hip and Thigh

Difficulty in lifting the knee towards the chest

Being an Orthopedician, I suggest a 10-to 15-minute of applying ice to the affected area. Also, advise avoiding activities that overuse your hip flexors. Furthermore, gentle stretching exercises can help to reduce muscle tension. Recovery time is often dependent on the injury’s severity. Mild strains can take a couple of weeks to heal, while severe strains can take up to six weeks or more to fully recover.

Foot and Ankle are the parts that help a human in standing, walking and doing regular chores. Pain and discomfort in the foot and ankle give an alarm that something is wrong. With the help of an orthopedist, find the source of pain and get remedy as early as possible.

Dr. Amit Saini, Orthopedician at Sapra Multispeciality Hospital discusses foot and ankle injuries common in the humans are:

1. Achilles Tendonitis: The Achilles tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel when get inflamed due to overuse is termed as Achilles Tendonitis.
