India on 17 June was elected as the non-permanent member by the UN Security Council with 184 of the 192 votes for a two-year term starting January 1, 2021.
The Indian permanent representative of the UN T S Trimurti, said in a video-recorded message:
Last time India served at the UNSC was between 2011 and 2012. The 193 UN member countries voted to elect five non-permanent members in a phased manner. The voting process followed social distancing norms and was organized in small groups. India’s previous terms were 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985 and 1991-1992.India expects to use its eighth term to build its permanent seat in a reformed Security Council.
The Security Council has 15 members. Five of them are permanent members –the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China — and 10 are non-permanent.
India’s priorities and approaches for another term of the Security Council are:
- Reformed Multilateralism to reflect contemporary realities
- Responsible and result-oriented action at the Security Council for an effective response to international terrorism.
- Comprehensive Approach to peace and security
India will follow a Five-S approach, to pursue these priorities: SammanSamvad, Sahyog, Shanti, and Samriddhi.
