Navratri 2018 : Worship Maa Siddhidatri on the 9th day of Navaratri

The ninth day of Navratri honors Maa Siddhidhatri. The word ‘Siddhi’ means ‘Supernatural power and word Dhatri means ‘ giver’. She is capable of giving all sorts of power to her devotees. She gives 8 supernatural power to those who worship her wholeheartedly. The eight powers or siddhis are Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakambya, Ishitva and Vashitva. Lord shiva was blessed by Siddhidhatri with all the eight supernatural powers. Because of this, the half body of Shiva became that of the Goddess Shakti and therefore he also came to be called as ‘Ardhanarishvar’. Goddess Siddhidatri has four arms. She holds a Chakra in her right lower hand and a mace in the upper. In the left lower hand there is a conch and in her upper left hand a lotus flower. She is seated on a lotus flower with the lion as her vehicle.

Dev, Danav, Gandharva, Kinnar, Yaksh, Manav, all do worship Maa Siddhidaatri and attain achievements.

Maa blessed her devotees with knowledge and make their soul pure. Dev, Danav, Gandharva, Kinnar, Yaksh, Manav, all do worship Maa Siddhidaatri and attain achievements. This day of worship of the mother is also called Ramnavmi. On this day, devotees invite nine girls to enjoy in the house. The age of girls should be more than two years and up to 10 years and their number must be at least 9. On who worship goddess Siddhidhatri with nine girls get all his wishes complete.

Navratri 2018 : Worship Maa Mahagauri on the 8th day of Navaratri

The eighth day of the Navratri honors Maa Mahagauri. Maha means ‘ extremely’ and Gauri means ‘ White’ as she is extremely white in color thus got this name. she is also called as ‘Shwetambardhara’ as she is white in color and adorns white clothes. She is four armed and rides a bull which is also white in color. In her four arms, she holds a trident, lotus and drum, while the fourth is in a blessing gesture.

There are different stories behind her fair complexion. One says that to get Lord Shiva as her husband, Goddess Parvati performed severe penance on the recommendation of lord Narad. She performed penance in the forest leaving all the comforts of palace behind. She penanced for many years because of which her body get covered with dust and soil and skin became blackish in color. Lord Shiva appeared before her and gave his solemn word that he would marry her. He bathed her by the holy waters of the Ganga. The holy and sacred waters of Ganga washed off all the dirt clinging to Parvati’s body and she became white-complexioned and glorious. Thus by virtue of having acquired a white complexion, Parvati came to be known as Mahagauri.

Devotees who worship Mahagauri gets relieved from all the fears. She punished those who do evil deeds. She has a calming effect on the lives of her devotees and she also helps them improve their knowledge. She leads to the path of inner peace.

Navratri 2018 : Worship Maa Kaalratri on the 7th day of Navaratri

The seventh form of Maa Durga honors Maa Kalratri. She is considered to be the most dangerous form of Durga. She is the goddess who believed to be the destroyer of all demons, ghosts and negative energy. She is called Kalratri because she rules the night portion of day and night.

The complexion of Kalaratri is that of the darkest of nights with bountiful hair and a heavenly shaped form. She has four hands – the left two hands hold a scimitar and a thunderbolt and the right two are in the varada (blessing) and abhaya (protecting) mudras. She wears a necklace that shines like the moon. Kaalratri has three eyes which emanate rays like lightning.

The story behind her creation is believed to be that there were two demons Shumbh and Nishumbh who were disturbing the devtas. The ruler of dev, Indra went to lord shiva for help. There goddess parvati heard their prayer and created a devi called ‘chandi’. ‘Chand’ and ‘Mund’ were the two demons sent by the shumbh and nishumbh to kill the devtas but devi ‘ chandi’ created a new form ‘kali’ which was more fierce and killed those demons and hence get name chamunda.

Another demon ‘Raktbeeja’ who was blessed that if any drop of blood fall on ground, his clones appears. In war with kalratri, his blood spilt on ground and created clones of him. To defeat him, devi formed her furious form and drank all his blood to stop it from falling down and killed raktbeeja.

Goddess Kaalratri can be seen as bearing doom for evil-doers. But she always bears good fruits for her devotees and should avoid fear when faced with her, for she removes the darkness of worry from life of such devotees.

Festivity and Symbolism of Nine Days of Shakti

India is a country of diverse cultures and festivals. And, festivals specially are the occasion which binds all of us together, as it gives us the leisure time and break from our work and stressful life.

In the recent years, it has been observed that festivals have adopted a new version of celebrations due to modern mindsets and the civilisation of technology.

Though, there are wide range of festivals in India, but the major celebrations of festivals begins in the month of October and November, embarking with the nine days holy festival called Navratri.

Navratri is that festival on which 'the highest, powerful and sacred hindu diety' is worshipped known as 'Durga or Shakti'. Navratri, as its name symbolises is a festival of 9 nights and 10 days. Goddess Durga is an epitome of energy in all forms, present in the Universe.

Inspite of having many modern reasons for the celebration of this festival, the two major and important mythological reasons are :

• Killing of Mahishasura, the fiercest demon, who didn't understand the power of a female, until, goddess Durga showed him to his final abode by defeating him in the battle, where she promised him to marry him if he wins the battle.
The assassination of Mahishasura also symbolises the end and removal of all evils from the Earth and that's why the tenth day is celebrated as 'Vijaydashmi', day of the victory.

•Another reason for the celebration of this festival, is Hindu lord, the legend, Lord Rama fasted and worshiped Goddess Durga for nine days and won over the ten headed Ravana by killing him, and the day is celebrated as Dusshera.

According to Puranas, devi Durga has 108 names, but this nine day festival is celebrated to worship nine forms of Durga, which has its own symbolism and meaning.

The first among these Nav - Durgas is

1) Shailputri : She is the prime energy of three Hindu God (Brahma. Vishnu and Mahesh) and is the daughter of Himalaya. The significance of her worship is that, it provides with the spiritual enlightenment to worshipper.

The second one is called 'Brahamcharini'. She is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. The idol of this form of goddess is extremely gorgeous, as she personifies the love and loyalty. This form of Durga is the store house of knowledge and showers extreme of peace, prosperity and grace to all her devotees.

On the third day, goddess 'Chandraghanta' is worshipped who is a symbol of tranquillity and prosperity. She has a golden charm on her face and rides a lion. She is an epitome of bravery and winning all the battles against evils.

On the fourth day, creator form of the Navdurga known as 'Kushmanda' is celebrated. She believes to be the giver of light to the whole Universe, otherwise this would have been dark, today as well.

Fifth day, is dedicated to the celebration of the mother of Lord 'Kartikeya', who was choosen to be the commander in chief for the battle against all the demons.

Her idol symbolises the motherly form of Goddess as she holds her child 'Skanda' while riding a lion. The interesting fact is that it is said and believed, that the one who chants this form of Durga can turn his ignorance into the ocean of knowledge.

On the sixth day, 'Katyayani' form of mother Durga is worshipped and celebrated. This form of goddess is a blessing for saint 'Katya', who wished a daughter and goddess Katyayani was born to him as an avatar of Durga, which is the greatest learned source for mankind that all daughters are 'Shakti and Durga' swaroop.

On seventh day, the idol who is the destroyer of darkness and ignorance is celebrated known as 'Kaalratri'. Her ride is a faithful donkey and her appearance is the wildest form of female diety with dark complexion and disheveled hair and a posture of fearlessness.

Mahagauri, whose worship is instantly fruitful and has unfailing power is worshipped on eight day of Navratri. The maidens in India considered to worship her to find the best life partner, as she won the heart of God Shiva, by her constant and perservance way of devotion.

Siddhidatri is the ninth form of Goddess. She is the giver of all the 'sidhis' to mankind. She is grateful goddess who turned the half body of Shiva into the goddess form and is recognised as 'Ardhanarishvar'. She is believed to be the grantor of 'twenty six' different wishes to her devotees.

Worshipers and devotees all over the India celebrate this festival with modern touch to the traditional aspect. The girl child is worshiped by offering various foods and gifts, to her on the last day of Navratri fast. All nine nights, Garba, a traditional Gujarati dance form is done by devotees and they are dressed up in magnificent and vibrant clothes, celebrate the aura and grace of goddess Durga.

And, the interesting fact about fasting during these nine days is that, the fasting is no more boring. Many interesting recipes has been created in recent times, which makes the festive - fasting season, a lot more luscious and delightful.

Many food brands in India, also offer special Navratri food and thali, during Navratri festival.

And, with this festival is celebrated with great pomp and show.

The third day of Navratri honors ‘ Maa Chandraghanta’ . Chandra means ‘Moon’ and Ghanta means ‘Bell’. She adorn half moon in the form of bell on her forehead, that’s why her name is Chandraghanta. Maa Chandraghanta is the married form of Maa Parvati. She symbolizes peace, serenity and nobility. She rides on lion and has three eyes and ten hands. In her ten hands, she holds ten weapons and swords. Weapons and swords shows that she is against the wrongdoers. She do justice and give courage to her devotees. She is always ready to help her devotees, to kill the evils troubling them and bless them with peaceful life. Those who worship this form of Durga, get blessed with wealth and all Prosperity.

There is a proper ritual that a devotee should follow while praying for Maa Chandraghanta. First worship all the Gods, Goddesses and Planets in the Kalash and then offer prayer to Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya and Goddess Saraswati, Lakshmi, Vijaya, Jaya – the family members of Goddess Durga. The pooja should be concluded by worshipping Goddess Chandraghanta followed by a heartfelt prayer to Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.
