This day was celebrated to commemorate the first human flight into space. In 1961 on April 12, a soviet Union cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin circled the Earth for 1 hour and 48 minutes. The spacecraft he used for his mission was VOSTOK 1. Gagarin’s flight created a milestone for the Soviet space program, opening a new age in the history of space exploration. World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day were established by the International Aeronautics Federation a year later in 1962. Many countries in the world organize a so-called Yuri’s Night on April 12. This event is devoted to the flight of Yuri Gagarin and to the first human flight of the American program Space Shuttle. The festival aims to increase public interest in space exploration.

The first Yuri’s Night was held in 2001 on the 40th anniversary of the first human flight into space. In 2004, the event was attended by representatives from 34 countries, every year the number of participants is increasing.
