What is BIMSTEC?

BIMSTEC, or the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, is a regional organization comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. It aims to promote regional integration and sustainable development among its member nations.

Key Highlights of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit:

1. Theme of the Summit:

The theme of this year’s summit was “BIMSTEC: Reinforcing Regional Integration for Shared Prosperity”. The theme reflected a strong commitment to deeper cooperation in areas like trade, connectivity, energy, disaster management, and security.

2. New BIMSTEC Charter Ratified:

All member countries ratified the BIMSTEC Charter, giving the organization a legal and institutional framework. This charter defines the vision, structure, and functioning of BIMSTEC, marking a major step in transforming it into a full-fledged regional grouping.

3. Focus on Transport and Digital Connectivity

Leaders emphasized the need for better transport infrastructure, including highways, railways, ports, and digital networks. India proposed a BIMSTEC Grid Interconnection Plan to enhance energy cooperation.

4. India’s Role and PM Modi’s Speech:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended virtually, highlighted India’s commitment to BIMSTEC’s goals. He called for stronger cooperation in counter-terrorism, cyber security, climate resilience, and economic integration. He also emphasized the importance of millet cultivation, digital innovation, and regional trade.

5. Economic and Trade Cooperation:

The summit saw discussions on finalizing the BIMSTEC Free Trade Agreement (FTA), aiming to boost intra-regional trade and economic ties. A decision was made to speed up negotiations and reduce trade barriers.

6. New BIMSTEC Centres Launched:

• Centre for Weather and Climate in Dhaka, Bangladesh
  
• BIMSTEC Technology Transfer Facility in Colombo, Sri Lanka

These institutions will enhance cooperation in research, innovation, and sustainability.

7. Disaster Management & Public Health:

Leaders also emphasized collaborative efforts in disaster preparedness, especially cyclones and tsunamis, and agreed to strengthen public health systems and vaccine production capabilities.

With this, the ongoing dispute between Musk and Twitter for the last several months has also ended. Musk offered $44 billion to buy Twitter. But later he backed out of it. After this, Twitter dragged him to court. Had Musk not pursued the deal by Friday, the court hearing would have started. Tesla CEO Musk acquired the micro-blogging platform Twitter, after a long time but before the court’s deadline.

Musk was embroiled for several months over the acquisition of Twitter. The US court had given him a deadline of Friday to complete the acquisition of Twitter. Failure to do so, Musk has to face trial in court. However, Musk took over Twitter on Friday before the deadline.

Elon reached the Twitter office a day ago

Elon Musk shared a video of himself walking into the Twitter office yesterday, October 27. He shared this video on Wednesday, two days before Friday’s deadline to complete the agreement to buy Twitter for $ 44 billion. Musk also changed his Twitter profile and wrote ‘Tweet chief’ in his personal statement. He also changed his location to Twitter HQ. Musk can be seen carrying a ‘sink’ to the premises of the Twitter office in the video.

These include the names of former Home Minister Priti Patel, and cabinet ministers James Cleverly and Nadeem Jahavi.

Rishi Sunak, the 42-year-old leader of the Conservative Party of Britain, will be the first Hindu and black Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was born in an Indian family in Southampton, UK. His mother was a Pharmacist and his father was a National Health Service (NHS) physician.

“Now is the time for Europe to wake up,” Zelensky remarked. “The world’s largest nuclear power plant is on fire. Russian tanks are currently pounding nuclear power plants. These are the tanks with thermal vision, which allows them to see where they’re shelling. They’d planned for it.”

According to Zelensky, the world is aware of what occurred in the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, as well as the pain of victims. He went on to say, “It was a global calamity.” “Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to protest the repercussions. Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes. Russia wants to do it all over again, but six times harder.”

Kyiv Russia’s main target – Zelensky

Russia’s attacks on Ukraine have been going on for 6 days. The Russian army is continuously moving towards Kyiv. Kyiv is still under the control of Ukraine. Ukraine says its soldiers and civilians are ready to fight Russian forces. On the other hand, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a message issued to the citizens of Ukraine, Kyiv is the main target for enemies. We will not let them break the security of the capital.

Oleksiy, adviser to the President of Ukraine, said Russian forces are trying to encircle Kyiv and Kharkiv, the second largest city in eastern Ukraine, from the north. Russian soldiers are continuously firing on Kyiv.

Not only this, alert sirens warning of attacks in Kyiv are constantly being saved. People are being asked to go to shelters. So that they do not come under any kind of attack.

Ukraine’s President on Sunday approached the International Court of Justice against Russia to hold Russia accountable for its actions. President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted that Russia must be accountable for “manipulating the notion of genocide to justify aggression. We request an urgent decision ordering Russia to cease military activity now and expect trials to start next week”.

In the ongoing war, Russia’s military invade Kharkiv, the second-largest city of Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has declined Russia’s offer of talks in Belarus, accusing Belarus of cooperation in Russia’s anti-Ukraine activity. Zelensky stated that he is also open to discussions, but not in Belarus. He suggested Warsaw, Bratislava, Budapest, Istanbul, and Baku as alternative locations for negotiations.

What is International Court of Justice?

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946.

The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands). Of the six principal organs of the United Nations, it is the only one not located in New York (United States of America).

The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies.

The Court is composed of 15 judges, who are elected for terms of office of nine years by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. It is assisted by a Registry, its administrative organ. Its official languages are English and French.
