“You don’t choose your family, they are God’s gift to you, as you are to them,” said Desmond Tutu.

The family is one of the natural masterpieces gifted by God to you. Family members are connected with a bond called love.

Every relationship has its unique place, but a bond between sister and brother is uncommon. You have spent your childhood with siblings fighting over toys, enjoying family vacations, occasions, helped your younger one in studies, and most importantly major life events. You have also promised to be there for your brother/sister whatever situation comes their way in the future.

To celebrate this special alliance, Hindus celebrate Raksha Bandhan- a day of brothers and sisters.

What is Raksha Bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan a Sanskrit word that means a bond of protection or care. Raksha Bandhan is a day to honor the bond of brothers and sisters. The festival is celebrated as sister ties a thread of love called Rakhi around the wrist of her brother. It symbolizes their close relationship and reminds the brother of duty to protect and care for his sister.

When Raksha Bandhan is celebrated?

Raksha Bandhan is especially a Hindu festival but celebrated by the Sikhs and Jain community also. It is celebrated on the full moon day of Shraavana, the fifth month in the Hindu calendar. This year, it is celebrated on 3rd August.

Why Raksha Bandhan is celebrated?

One of the sacred Hindu books tells the story of Indra, who was fighting a battle against a demon called Bali. When his wife, Sachi, tied a thread to his husbands’ wrist, he returned to the battle and triumphed against the demon Bali.

Another story tells how the goddess Lakshmi made Bali as a brother by tieing rakhi to him so that Bali allows Lakshmi’s husband Vishnu to leave his palace.

The third story tells that Yama, the brother of the goddess Yamuna, visited her after many years, and she requested him to visit her again to which he agreed out of love for his sister.

The exact reason is still unclear why Raksha Bandhan is celebrated.

Raksha Bandhan is primarily concerned with the bond between brother and sister. It is a festival that brings the family together. Raksha Bandhan is a day of spreading love, respect, harmony and praying for brother’s well being.

We wish this RakshaBandhan will make your relation more strong with your sibling.

Happy Raksha Bandhan!
The post Raksha Bandhan – A bond of sister and brother love first appeared on Jugaadin News .
