The plan has been approved in the meeting of the Union Cabinet. This is expected to benefit more than 11.2 lakh students of the government and government-aided schools across the country. Under the scheme, mid-day meals will be ensured to the school students. Till now it was known as Mid-Day Meal Scheme. However, now the children will be given lunch under the PM-Poshan scheme. The burden of this scheme will be shared by the Central and State Governments.

Addressing the media, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said that this scheme will last for 5 years and 1.31 lakh crore rupees will be spent. According to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, pre-school children in the age group of 1-5 years participating in ‘Bal Vatika’ will also be covered under the scheme. According to Dharmendra Pradhan, locally grown nutritious food grains can be made available for mid-day meals in schools under this scheme. Introduction of Tithi Bhojan, social audit, school nutrition gardens & several other measures will help in the effective implementation of the scheme and boost learning & nutrition outcomes.
