When a large pressure or force is applied on a bone and it is not able to bear it, then it occurs the stress fractures. Stress fractures are small breaks or cracks in a bone. Weakening of bones due to osteoporosis can also lead to Stress fractures. Stress fractures are common in weight-bearing bones of the foot, leg, and pelvis. The person who is more indulge in walking, running and jumping with heavyweights like field athletes and military recruits are more prone to this.

Dr. Amit Saini (Orthopedician and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Hisar) explained that fractures occur when a single large force is applied on the bone whereas stress fractures caused by overuse of bones and the failure to have adequate equipment to protect the body.

Symptoms of Stress fractures

At first, stress fractures are not painful, but over time the pain worsens. With physical activity and weight-bearing, the pain usually intensifies and subsides with rest. There may also be swelling and inflammation around the affected area. Localized swelling can occur at the injury site, and if the area is touched, spot tenderness can occur.

People who are more indulge in activities like playing, running, gymnastics and field tracks are more prone to stress fractures as their bones are in constant pressure with the ground.

If you are suffering from a Stress fracture

Consult an expert Orthopedician in Hissar if you think you may be suffering from a stress fracture. An orthopedist will have to perform a thorough physical examination and perform tests to make sure you don’t suffer from anything else before starting the treatment.

For fast recovery from a stress fracture, Rest is a key solution. Patients should avoid the activity that caused the fracture until complete healing of the injury. Otherwise, the risk of re-injury is present, which usually takes longer to heal. Patients may also wear braces and inserts to stabilize the injured part of the body and help the bone heal more quickly.

Our body joints are connected through a band of tissues called Ligaments. The knee joint has a key ligament called Anterior cruciate Ligament (ACL) which connects the thighbone (femur) to shinbone (tibia) and helps in stabilizing the knee joint. This ACL gets injured in sports and athlete persons more as compare to any other normal individual. ACL can tear at any age and more often in individuals who are indulged in sports like soccer, football, basketball or volleyball.

How an ACL can tear

The main reasons for getting ACL tear are when you stop suddenly while running, Jumping or landing with straightened Knee and abruptly stretching the knee.

Dr. Amit Saini (Leading orthopedician in Hisar) telling the symptoms of torn out ACL which usually include: popping sensation in the knee, swelling, severe pain, and instability. Based on the severity of ACL, orthopedician suggest you rest or surgery as a treatment option.

After your ACL surgery, the body requires a long time for rehabilitation. But this long rehabilitation time is not liked by sports people. They always wanted to go back to sports as soon as possible. But there must be some tips that they should follow after the reconstruction includes:

1. Reduce the swelling

After the surgery, elevate your leg as much as possible. Do the cold compressing technique to get relieved from the swelling.

2. Use Knee Support

Always use the Knee support, before going to any activity or
sports. Knee Brace is very necessary for an individual who has undergone ACL
surgery.

3. Do exercises to
keep the blood moving in your foot, ankle, and leg so that no blood clot
occurs.

4. Consult the physical therapist who will give you an
exercise program to help you build strength in your knee and avoid injury.

5. Rest as much as possible.

6. Think positive and stay motivated during the
rehabilitation time as most of the patients are not able to return to their
sports just because of their lack of will power and motivation.

If you have any questions about ACL tear surgery or rehabilitation, consult the orthopedician.

There are some vital tips given by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Amit Saini to keep your joints strong and flexible during the winter season. It is essential to keep joints healthy during winters as sunlight which helps in absorption of vitamin D become restricted and also the blood flow to the peripheral areas in the body decreases. When blood supply reduces, it leads to joint stiffness and pain.

So to keep the joints healthy and strong, follow the tips given by Dr. Amit Saini (Joint replacement surgeon at Sapra Multispecialty Hospital)

1. Replenish your diet with essential vitamins

Keep your bones strong this winter by packing your diet with healthy calcium-containing foods or vitamin-like D, K and C which helps in absorption of calcium. Milk and yogurt are the natural choices, but there are lots of vegetable sources too, from leafy greens to oranges, lemon.

Vitamin D from Sun

2. Keep the joints and bones warm

It is crucial to keep the joints warm. Your muscles tense and stiffen when you feel cold and shiver, making them more susceptible to injury and general discomfort. Warm water shower and thermals will keep your joints warm, flexible and revive the arthritis pain.

3. Exercising

Frequent exercising and brisk walking are necessary for the active joints in the winter. Exercising helps in strengthening of muscles and maintaining the body weight.

4. Limit the use of sodas and tea/coffee

Caffeinated drinks and other fizzy beverages reduce calcium absorption. And calcium deficiency can cause bone problems. Therefore, apart from having calcium-rich food, one should avoid having fizzy drinks so that the body absorbs the calcium you are having.

Say no to Caffeinated Beverages

5. Right posture is Necessary

Half of the problems of joints are due to wrong posture
habits. Right sitting and standing postures are necessary to keep the joint
strong. Take care of your joints when you lift and carry heavy stuff.

Right posture

Thus follow these simple habits and keep your joints and bones warm. If pain persists and joints get stiff, ask for the help of orthopedists.

www.dramitsaini.com

The post How to keep Joints strong during winters first appeared on Jugaadin News .

Not only common in athletes but also in non-athletes. In broader terms, it is also known as Patellofemoral pain syndrome.

According to Dr. Amit Saini, Orthopedician at Sapra Multispeciality Hospital Hisar, Patellofemoral pain syndrome shows stiffness and pain in the kneecap and the sufferer may be unable to do his day to day tasks like climbing stairs and kneel down.

Patellofemoral is consists of two words Patella also called kneecap and Femur bone (thighbone). The patella rests in a groove on the top of the femur called the trochlea. While bending and straightening the knee, the patella moves back and forth inside this trochlear groove. The ends of the femur, trochlear groove, and the underside of the patella are covered by a sticky substance called articular cartilage. Articular cartilage helps in moving up and down of the bone. Synovium-— a thin lining of tissue that covers the joint’s surface also helps in movement. A thin pad of fat acts as a shock absorber just below the kneecap, cushions the kneecap.

The reason for the occurrence of Patellofemoral pain is due to nerve pain around kneecap and tissues due to over physical activity including knee joint.

Overdoing of squatting, climbing, and jogging can cause the syndrome

Muscular Imbalance: Patellofemoral pain can occur when the muscles around your hip and knee don’t keep your kneecap properly aligned. This is also known as PatelIar Malalignment.

Injury, dislocation to the knee can cause Patellofemoral pain.

According to Dr. Amit Saini, patients suffering from Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome have the following symptoms:

Pain in the front of the knee

Pain occurs during running, climbing the stairs, jogging, and bending of the knee.

Pain on while sitting for a long time with bent knees.

There are some steps by doing which knee pain can be prevented. After all the knee pain persists, visit the orthopedics for the treatment.

1. Work on your extra weight. Shed the extra kilos of your body as they lay an unnecessary burden on the knees.

2. Before going any exercise, always try to warm up the body by doing simple exercises.

3. Ask an orthopedician or physical therapist about mobility and strength exercises to improve the technique of jumping, walking, and running — and help the groove control the patella properly.

4. Always wear properly fitted shoes.

Some home remedies for Patellofemoral pain include

1. RICE Treatment: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

Rest: Stay away from any physical activities that would put any pressure on the affected area.
Ice: Apply ice to the affected area every 2 to 3 hours for about 20 minutes each time.
Compression: Reduce swelling by wrapping the affected area with a stretchy bandage.
Elevation: Raise the injured area if possible.

Sprains and strains are two terms that are always used interchangeably but there is a wide difference between these two injuries. Dr. Amit Saini, Orthopaedic surgeon, Sapra Multispeciality Hospital, Hisar here will explain the difference between the sprain and strain, their causes and preventive measures.

Strain: Tendons are tissues that connect our muscles to bones and injury to this tissue is known as Strain. Strain can be of mild, moderate and severe based on tearing of tissue, pain, and swelling.

Sprain: Ligaments are the thick fibrous connective tissue that connects one bone to other bone and injury to the ligaments causes sprain in the body.

Causes:

The Strain is caused when excessive pressure is put on the muscles due to which they get stretched or pulled away from the bone whereas Sprain is caused due to an injury to the ligament which makes the joint difficult to move in the right direction.

Symptoms:

Symptoms for sprains and strains are similar which include
pain and swelling in the injured area, difficulty using or moving the injured
area in a normal way, warmth, bruising or redness in the injured area.

Areas Affected:

In Sprain: most common is ankle joint, then knee, fingers, toes, and wrist.

In Strain: Lower Back, legs, Elbow. Elbow strain can be of
two types: tennis elbow and Golfer’s elbow.

Treatment

Both Sprains and Strains are treated in a similar way. Mild
sprains and strains can be treated using home remedies and over-the-counter
medications.

The main treatment for all sprains and strains is RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

For pain, over-the-counter pain relievers can be helpful.

If pain persists even after doing RICE treatment, evaluation by a specialist doctor or Orthopedician is required then. An orthopaedician will diagnose the root cause of the problem and determine how much damage has been caused due to an injury. If the injury is severe, like a complete tear, he may recommend surgery.

Joint Pain in any part of the body makes life difficult. And if the pain occurs in the shoulders, life becomes horrible as a person suffering from shoulder pain is unable to do any task and can’t get enough sleep too.

Dr. Amit Saini, Orthopedician at Sapra Multispecialty Hospital in Hisar shares the kind of shoulder pains and ways of getting rid of shoulder pain.

There are many causes due to which shoulder pain can occur. This may include inflammation, Instability, Arthritis, and Fracture (broken bone).

Some ways to ease shoulder pain are:

1. Cold and Heat Therapy: To ease the swelling and numbness of shoulder, use Cold compresses. Apply an ice pack or frozen gel pack, to your shoulder for 20 minutes at a time, up to five times a day. Always make sure the cold compress must get wrapped while applying. Heat therapy can relax muscles and ease stiffness.

Pic Source: Google

2. Use Anti-inflammatory medicines: If you feel like muscle tension and strain in shoulders, apply muscle relaxants or take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) like aspirin and ibuprofen can help relieve pain and inflammation.

3. Exercise: Exercise to relieve pain and increase flexibility. If exercising is worsening your pain, don’t do it. Take some rest and try afterward. Don’t do overexertion or activities that demand high mobility of shoulder muscles.

Pic Source: Google

Pic Source: Google

4. Surgery: Surgery is the last option in shoulder pain treatment. Surgery is recommended by an orthopedist when all the other options get failed. In some cases such as recurring dislocations and some rotator cuff tears, surgery is recommended by an orthopedist.

Operation may require arthroscopy to remove scar tissue or repair tore tissue or traditional open processes for bigger reconstructions or replacement of the shoulder.

Dr.Amit Saini recommends that one should see an orthopedician when he is experiencing the following:

Pain that is not improving with rest and medication.

If your shoulder is so stiff that it can’t be lifted and rotated normally

Shoulder pain is occurring repeatedly

Separation or dislocation: if your shoulder is dislocated or feels like it could slide out

The post Shoulder pain and its remedial measures first appeared on Jugaadin News .

Osteoarthritis a term very common nowadays is a degenerative joint disease. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage, an elastic tissue that protects joints and provides the lubrication for normal joint function start degenerating. This deterioration of cartilage can affect any joint of the body like spine, hands, knees, hips etc.

Dr. Amit Saini, Consultant orthopedician at Sapra multispeciality Hospital, Hisar aware that Spine osteoarthritis is common among all and extremely painful. In this case, joint become stiff due fluid buildup during the long inactivity of bones. That’s why stiffness became worse in the morning but with some physical activity, it reduces later on.

The symptoms of spinal Osteoarthritis include back pain. When a person sits upright or stand, the pain became worse. The flexibility of the joints reduces in the spinal osteoarthritis. A sensation of pinching, tingling, or numbness in a nerve or the spinal cord can occur. Sound of bone rubbing can also be heard in some extreme cases.

As this is a progressive degenerative disease, it became worse with the passage of time. Dr. Amit Saini said “early diagnosis with the help of orthopedic surgeon and following the steps prescribed can help in treating the spinal osteoarthritis:

Do strengthening exercises

Reduce weight

Anti inflammatory medications

Heat or cold therapy

Make some changes in lifestyle. Include walking, swimming, aerobic activities, and yoga.

Never ignore the symptoms and talk to your orthopedician if you have pain, numbness, weakness, or swelling in your back — or in any part of your body.

Sports injuries are likely a part of an athlete’s life. Whether practicing football, soccer, or hockey, cricket most players in their life will suffer some kind of sports injury. These sports injuries can be minor to career-ending and can affect from children to adults. A big neglecting to these injuries can lead to arthritis and even severe deformities later on in life. Thus, Prevention of these sports injuries is very necessary in order to get maximum efficiency out of the body.

Dr. Amit Saini ( Orthopaedician, Sapra Multispeciality Hospital, Hisar) gave some sports injuries prevention tips to follow for healthy bones.

1. Good diet: Feeding your body the correct blend of healthy protein and carbohydrates will increase stamina. It is essential to maintain a healthy diet on a continuous ground, not just on days when you participate in your favorite sport. Fruits, vegetables and right amount of calcium are essential for overall health.

2. Use the correct safety equipment: Dr. Amit Saini warns that athlete or sports person should take care of their protective pads and helmet to be used in the sports. These protective things shouldn’t be faulty or defective in any case.

3. Keep the body hydrated: Before, during and after your activities and gaming sessions, it is essential to drink liquids including water and electrolyte-rich liquids. Proper hydration enables your brain function at its finest, reducing the probability of cramping and showing bad shape that can result in sports injuries.

4. Always look for therapy: Dr. Amit Saini suggests whenever an athlete met with an accident or an injury, he/ she should stop playing for some moment and take a rest before going to join for next match. Meeting an orthopedic surgeon, particularly one who is a sports medicine partner, is a good method to determine how long you have to take rest.

5. You can take advantage of strength training activities to improve efficiency and preventing injuries. Which conditioning exercises are ideal for you, always consult specified trainer and coach.

Being an athlete or sports person, at any point in time you can experience injuries in spite of following all the preventive measures. Be sure to consult an orthopedic surgeon if you do sustain an orthopedic sports injury.
