On the day of Dhanteras, worshipping of Yamraj, the god of death (Yama Puja) is also done. Buying gold-silver jewelry and utensils on this day is considered auspicious. Dhanteras is also a symbol of the beginning of the Deepawali festival. This is followed by Chhoti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi, Badi or Main Deepawali (Diwali), Govardhan Puja and finally the festival of Bhai Dooj or Bhaiya Dooj.

When is Dhanteras celebrated?

The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated every year two days before Deepawali. According to the Hindu calendar, Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th day of the month of Kartik. According to the Gregorian calendar, this festival falls in the month of October or November every year. This time Dhanteras is on 25 October.

Importance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi, Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhanvantri Jayanti. It is believed that Lord Dhanwantari appeared on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi during Samudra Manthan, carrying Amrit Kalash in his hands. It is said that for the expansion and spread of medical science, Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Dhanvantari. The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated to commemorate the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari. According to mythological beliefs, worshiping Lakshmi on the day of Dhanteras makes the house full of wealth. It is also considered auspicious to purchase and bring home a new idol of Lakshmi Ganesh on this day.

In the program, singer Anil jangra (Advocate) with his team presented beautiful rendition of hymns. School children presented a dance performance on the occasion. On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, 500 families of the city made Ganpati from cow dung which they immersed at Shri Krishna pranami asharam in a program sponsored by Fine fit Company and Jambh Shakti .

This type of Ganpati visarjan will give fertilizer and avoid contamination of water. The festival celebrates Lord Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence and is observed throughout India, especially in the states such as Maharashtra. Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha every day during the festival.  After a long time, two auspicious planetary transitions are occurring due to which the importance of Ganesh Chaturthi has increased. The coincidence of Chitra Nakshatra and Chaturthi Tithi will start from 8 am on September 2 and remain for the whole day.

There is a proper ritual that a devotee should follow while praying for Maa Chandraghanta. First worship all the Gods, Goddesses and Planets in the Kalash and then offer prayer to Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya and Goddess Saraswati, Lakshmi, Vijaya, Jaya – the family members of Goddess Durga. The pooja should be concluded by worshipping Goddess Chandraghanta followed by a heartfelt prayer to Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.
