Muscle knots are sensitive bump-like areas of muscles that cause pain in touching. In medical terms, they are also known as Myofascial trigger points. When the muscle fibers and tissue band called fascia get tense and hard, muscle knots formed. These trigger points can be developed in any part of the body but usually found in your back, shoulders, neck, and Hip area. You can feel the swollen and tight bump when you press a muscle knot. They’re sensitive to touch.

What causes muscle knots to form?

These trigger points in muscle can be formed due to factors like stress, anxiety, injuries, sedentary lifestyle (No stretching and movement), Unhealthy eating habits, overtiredness, and dehydration.

Common symptoms of Muscle knots

If you’re suffering from muscle knots, you will experience symptoms like muscle pain, muscle tightness, poor muscle strength and performance, fatigue, and stress.

Home Treatment options for Muscle Knots

Muscle knots or myofascial trigger points can be treated with simple home remedies. Professional doctors or orthopedics treatment is necessary only when there is no benefit seen by home remedies.

Follow some of the home remedies to get rid of the muscle knots

1. Give rest to the body from certain activities that seem to cause muscle knots. If you’re having a sedentary lifestyle, take a break from that and give relaxation to the body.

2. Doing body stretching can help release the tension from the body and reduce your chances of developing muscle knots. Be gentle with yourself as you stretch. Don’t do something that causes pain.

stretching

3. Physical exercises are always recommended by orthopedicians in joint pain and muscle pain. To get relief from muscle knot, aerobic exercises should be done. This will increase the blood supply and loosens the muscle fibers.

4. Applying a heating pad or ice pack to the affected area can also alleviate the pain and inflammation. Cold therapy helps to constrict the blood vessel, which reduces swelling whereas Heat pad relaxes and loosens stiff muscles, and relieves pain.

Heat/Ice pack

5. You can self massage the trigger points with gentle hands. Apply steady pressure on the point for a few seconds and release, will help to loosen tight muscle fibers.

Self Massage trigger Points

You can also prevent the formation of muscle knots just by following good sitting posture and maintain an active lifestyle that would include physical exercise and healthy eating habits. Your diet must contain calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and you should keep your body hydrated by drinking enough water.

Also, if by doing home remedies you are not getting relief from myofascial trigger points, do consult a doctor, physical therapist, or orthopedist to check the root cause of the pain as sometimes, swollen lymph nodes also misunderstood as muscle knots.

With Coronavirus (COVID19) entry in India, the corona infected patients are increasing day by day. The Healthcare system has informed to postpone all other important surgeries amidst the corona. They have instructed to set aside beds, prepare isolation facilities, procure ventilators, and manpower to combat the COVID-19.

A small survey finds that it is not only hospitals or doctors that postponing the major surgeries but some patients are canceling elective procedures because of the outbreak. Many doctors say they are seeing patients canceling or deferring procedures because of Corona’s fear.

So, to know the reason behind postponing surgeries and not visiting doctors during Corona, Jugaadin News has Dr. Amit Saini at its Talk @Jugaadin News. Dr. Amit Saini is a leading orthopedician at Sapra Multispeciality Hospital, Hisar. While addressing he says that the cancellation of procedures so far has been minimal, but with spreading viruses more patients are changing their plans to stop the spread of coronavirus.

If I talk about ortho surgeries like knee replacement, hip replacement, carpal tunnel surgeries patients who had scheduled their surgeries are now postponing procedures to avoid exposure to Corona. Patients are likely to see healthcare facilities as high-risk areas for exposure to infectious coronavirus. Though they are taking the right step during quarantine time, but they should follow some precautions so as not to come across any emergency.

Patients who have postponed their surgeries should always be in contact with the concerned doctor through telephonic or Messenger. If they see any emergency or medical condition, they should consult the medical practitioner as early as possible. They must have enough stock of prescribed medications with them. They should take all the precautionary measures against corona. There is no need to panic if surgery gets delayed by 5 to10 days said Dr. Amit saini.

We as Health care providers are delaying elective care to keep beds open and to prevent patients from contracting a new coronavirus, but this does not mean that patients should be cut off from life-saving treatment if needed.

Bones provide the basic structure to the human body. Bones also play other functions like protecting the organs, attaching muscles, etc. As a person ages, the bone density keeps on decreasing because the born formation process slows down and old bone degeneration process fastens up which ultimately leads to osteoporosis. In osteoporosis, bones may become thin and break easily.

Osteoporosis

Dr. Amit Saini, Best orthopedician and knee replacement surgeon in Hisar suggests that “Osteoporosis can be prevented by taking a healthy diet and nutrients; it may reduce bone loss. He is suggesting some ways through which bone mass density can be maintained and a person can enjoy a happy life without feeling pain in bones and joints.

Ways to follow for healthy bones:

1. Take plenty of calcium and vitamin D: For bones to be strong and flexible, calcium-rich diet is necessary and for the absorption of calcium, vitamin D is essential. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, almonds, broccoli, kale, salmon, sardines and soy products. The natural and best source of getting vitamin D is Sunlight. The other major sources are mushrooms, eggs, fortified foods, milk and cereals, salmon, trout, whitefish, and tuna. The Institute of Medicine recommends 1,000 mg of calcium a day for most adults and 1,200 mg/day for women after menopause and men after 70.

2. Be physically active: a person should walk, run, dance, do yoga and aerobics on a regular basis for at least 30 minutes a day to keep bones healthy and strong. A physically active person is at less risk of getting osteoporosis as compared to less active.

3. Quit smoking and Drinking: Loss of bone mineral density is associated with smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Limit the dosage of smoking and alcohol to prevent the loss of bones as bad habits bring bad health.

When a large pressure or force is applied on a bone and it is not able to bear it, then it occurs the stress fractures. Stress fractures are small breaks or cracks in a bone. Weakening of bones due to osteoporosis can also lead to Stress fractures. Stress fractures are common in weight-bearing bones of the foot, leg, and pelvis. The person who is more indulge in walking, running and jumping with heavyweights like field athletes and military recruits are more prone to this.

Dr. Amit Saini (Orthopedician and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Hisar) explained that fractures occur when a single large force is applied on the bone whereas stress fractures caused by overuse of bones and the failure to have adequate equipment to protect the body.

Symptoms of Stress fractures

At first, stress fractures are not painful, but over time the pain worsens. With physical activity and weight-bearing, the pain usually intensifies and subsides with rest. There may also be swelling and inflammation around the affected area. Localized swelling can occur at the injury site, and if the area is touched, spot tenderness can occur.

People who are more indulge in activities like playing, running, gymnastics and field tracks are more prone to stress fractures as their bones are in constant pressure with the ground.

If you are suffering from a Stress fracture

Consult an expert Orthopedician in Hissar if you think you may be suffering from a stress fracture. An orthopedist will have to perform a thorough physical examination and perform tests to make sure you don’t suffer from anything else before starting the treatment.

For fast recovery from a stress fracture, Rest is a key solution. Patients should avoid the activity that caused the fracture until complete healing of the injury. Otherwise, the risk of re-injury is present, which usually takes longer to heal. Patients may also wear braces and inserts to stabilize the injured part of the body and help the bone heal more quickly.

Runner’s knee or Jumper’s Knee is a common pain syndrome for people who are active in sports. Not only common in athletes but also in non-athletes. In broader terms, it is also known as Patellofemoral pain syndrome.

According to Dr. Amit Saini, Orthopedician at Sapra Multispeciality Hospital Hisar, Patellofemoral pain syndrome shows stiffness and pain in the kneecap and the sufferer may be unable to do his day to day tasks like climbing stairs and kneel down.

Patellofemoral is consists of two words Patella also called kneecap and Femur bone (thighbone). The patella rests in a groove on the top of the femur called the trochlea. While bending and straightening the knee, the patella moves back and forth inside this trochlear groove. The ends of the femur, trochlear groove, and the underside of the patella are covered by a sticky substance called articular cartilage. Articular cartilage helps in moving up and down of the bone. Synovium-— a thin lining of tissue that covers the joint’s surface also helps in movement. A thin pad of fat acts as a shock absorber just below the kneecap, cushions the kneecap.

The reason for the occurrence of Patellofemoral pain is due to nerve pain around kneecap and tissues due to over physical activity including knee joint.

Overdoing of squatting, climbing, and jogging can cause the syndrome

Muscular Imbalance: Patellofemoral pain can occur when the muscles around your hip and knee don’t keep your kneecap properly aligned. This is also known as PatelIar Malalignment.

Injury, dislocation to the knee can cause Patellofemoral pain.

According to Dr. Amit Saini, patients suffering from Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome have the following symptoms:

Pain in the front of the knee

Pain occurs during running, climbing the stairs, jogging, and bending of the knee.

Pain on while sitting for a long time with bent knees.

There are some steps by doing which knee pain can be prevented. After all the knee pain persists, visit the orthopedics for the treatment.

1. Work on your extra weight. Shed the extra kilos of your body as they lay an unnecessary burden on the knees.

2. Before going any exercise, always try to warm up the body by doing simple exercises.

3. Ask an orthopedician or physical therapist about mobility and strength exercises to improve the technique of jumping, walking, and running — and help the groove control the patella properly.

4. Always wear properly fitted shoes.

Some home remedies for Patellofemoral pain include

1. RICE Treatment: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

Rest: Stay away from any physical activities that would put any pressure on the affected area.
Ice: Apply ice to the affected area every 2 to 3 hours for about 20 minutes each time.
Compression: Reduce swelling by wrapping the affected area with a stretchy bandage.
Elevation: Raise the injured area if possible.

2. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be helpful.
