The award is presented since 2003 and is named after English evolutionary biologist and author Richard Dawkins. Every year Richard Dawkins award is presented to an individual from the field of science, education, entertainment, upholding scientific truth, and who publicly proclaims the values of secularism and rationalism.

Bollywood celebrities took social media to congratulate the writer on recognition.

Javed Akhtar has written the screenplay for iconic movies like Zanjeer, Sholay, and Deewar also has five National Awards Padma Shri (1999), Padma Bhushan (2007), and even the Sahitya Akademi Award.
