Quit India Movement was a mass movement against British rule in India. As it is started in August, it is also known as August Kranti or August Movement.

Some facts about the Quit India Movement:

1. Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank Maidan is the place where the Quit India Movement initiated. Leaders gathered here on August 8 with Mahatma Gandhi to protest.

2. Mahatma Gandhi Ji gave the slogan of Do or Die in his Quit India speech at Gowalia tank Maidan.

3. After a few hours of Gandhi Ji’s speech, the entire INC was arrested without trial.

4. The Quit India Movement failed as the British had the support of the Viceroy’s Council, All India Muslim League, the Indian Imperial Police, the princely states, the British Indian Army, the Hindu Mahasabha, and the Indian Civil Service.

5. Quit India failed because of heavy suppression, weak coordination, and the lack of a clear-cut program of action.

6. The British declined to grant independence immediately and claimed that it could only be given at the end of the war. Eventually, India achieved independence in 1947.
