Makar Sakranti, a festival celebrated after Lohri is considered to be an auspicious time. Usually it is celebrated on 14th January but this year it is on 15th January. Makar sakranti is related to the geographical placement of the sun. It is also called Uttrayan as sun comes on the maker line. This marks the onset of summer and time for some spiritual activities like taking bath in a holy river to absolve the past sins, offering Prasad to God surya and offering charity to poor. The day is celebrated by different names in different parts of the country — Lohri in North India, Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Makar Sankranti in Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and the neighbouring regions. It is important as harvesting is done at this time and people thanked almighty for good harvest and seek blessings for prosperity and happiness.
