History of International Women’s Day

International women’s Day is celebrated since the 19^th century. Women called Clara Zetkin suggested the idea of International Women Day at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, in 1910. In 1911 first International Women Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. This day was made official in 1975 when the United Nations (UN) started celebrating the day and set an annual theme.

The color Purple signifies justice and dignity. Purple is the color that symbolizes women.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2020

The theme for international women’s day 2020 is #Each for Equal which means we can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.

UN Women has also issued a 2020 theme:

“I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.”The theme is aligned with UN Women’s new multigenerational campaign, for pursuing equality called Generation Equality. Today, gender equality is not achieved by a single country. Women and girls are still undervalued they earn less than there work and have fewer choices, and go through multiple forms of violence at home and in public spaces.

How Women’s day celebrated around the world

This day is celebrated in different ways around the globe:
