National Farmers Day is celebrated in honor of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India. From 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980, he served the country as Prime Minister for a very short tenure. He was a very simple and kind minded person who led a very sober life. During his tenure as Prime Minister, he initiated several policies to improve the lives of Indian farmers as he also belonged to a farmer family.

India is primarily a land of villages and the majority of the population living in villages is of farmers and agriculture is their major source of income. Still, 70% of the Indian population depends on the income generated through farming. Farmers are the backbone of India. The country of agricultural land, India celebrates National Farmers Day on 23 December to honor the great work done by the farmers of our country.
