India Beat England by 6 Wickets to Take 1-0 ODI Series Lead

India made a strong comeback by defeating England by 6 wickets in the first ODI at Edgbaston. After a disappointing T20I series, the Men in Blue showed excellent teamwork with both bat and ball. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a classy 80 runs, while Axar Patel produced a brilliant all-round performance to help India take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

England Recover After Early Collapse

England won the toss and decided to bat first. Their innings started well, but India’s bowlers quickly changed the game. England slipped from 61 without loss to 80 for 5, thanks to disciplined bowling led by Axar Patel.

Veteran batter Joe Root played a fighting knock of 76 not out, while Liam Dawson added an important 68 runs. Together they built a valuable partnership and helped England reach 258 all out in 47.5 overs. Although England recovered well, India had already gained control of the match.

Shubman Gill Gives India a Perfect Start

India began the chase confidently. Captain Shubman Gill looked in excellent touch from the beginning. He played attractive cricket shots all around the ground and scored 80 runs from 75 balls before retiring hurt because of cramps.

Gill’s innings gave India the perfect platform for victory. His calm batting ensured that the required run rate remained under control throughout the chase.

Axar Patel and Washington Sundar Finish the Job

After India lost a few quick wickets, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar took responsibility.

Axar scored an unbeaten 57 runs, while Sundar remained not out on 52. The pair added a match-winning 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket and guided India to 262/4 with 28 balls remaining.

Sundar finished the game in style with a huge six, giving India a comfortable victory and an important lead in the series.

Axar Patel Named Player of the Match

Axar Patel was the biggest hero of the match. Before making an unbeaten half-century, he had already troubled England with the ball.

The left-arm spinner picked up 4 wickets, breaking England’s strong start and putting India in control. His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award and highlighted his growing importance in India’s ODI team.

Big Boost for Team India

This victory is very important for India. The team had recently struggled in the T20I series, but the experienced ODI players responded brilliantly.

Captain Shubman Gill led with confidence, while senior players and all-rounders supported him well. India’s bowling attack looked balanced, and the batting lineup chased the target without panic.

Winning the first ODI also gives India confidence before the remaining matches in Cardiff and Lord’s.

What England Must Improve

England will need to improve before the second ODI. Their batting collapse in the middle overs proved costly despite the good partnership between Root and Dawson.

The bowling attack also failed to stop India’s middle order after Gill’s excellent start. The home team will now look to bounce back and level the series in the next match.
