World Tourism Day: Why tourism day is celebrated?

World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27 September. This time the theme of World Tourism Day is “Tourism and jobs: a better future for all”. This year India is going to host the World Tourism Day 2019. The purpose of celebrating World Tourism Day is to raise awareness about the role of tourism around the world and to promote social, cultural, political and economic values. This day can help in increasing mutual understanding among people all over the world.

Why is World Tourism Day celebrated?

World Tourism Day was started in view of the importance and popularity of tourism. United Nations world tourism organization gives every year a new theme to World Tourism Day to make people aware of tourism around the world. The United Nations decided to celebrate September 27, 1980, as World Tourism Day. The day of September 27 was chosen for World Tourism Day because the Constitution of the World Tourism Organization was accepted on this day in 1970.

India is famous all over the world for its historical and natural beauty. The country is continuously increasing in the field of tourism. More than 1 crore foreign tourists come here every year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the number of foreign tourists coming to India has increased. One crore sixty-five lakh tourists visited India in 2018.

On the occasion of world tourism day 2019, the Secretary-General, UNWTO said that Tourism can help us build a better future for everyone. Around the world, the tourism sector is the leading source of employment, supporting many millions of jobs and driving economies forward, both at the local and the national level.
