World Poetry Day

Every year on March 21, World poetry day is celebrated to appreciate and support poets and poetry around the globe. UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and cultural and organization) declared March 21 as World poetry in the year 1999.

In 1999, during its 30thGeneral Conference in Paris UNESCO declared 21 march as world poetry day. The first world poetry day was celebrated in October.  The World Poetry Day is an opportunity to honor the contribution of poets, reviving the traditions of poetry recitals, encouraging the reading, writing, and teaching of poetry, and linking poetry and other arts such as theatre, dance, music, and painting, to increase the exposure of poetry in the media.

To support linguistic differences through poetic expression and to provide a chance to endangered languages to be heard within their communities is the main objective behind celebrating World Poetry Day. The day is celebrated by reciting poems, encouraging new poets to come forward so that poetry is not considered an old fashioned art.
