To raise awareness about consumer rights and needs, every year on 15th March World Consumer Rights day is celebrated. On 15th March 1962, President John F Kennedy became the first leader who formally addressed the issue of consumer rights. In 1983, the first World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated and after that every year the day commemorated to assemble people and inform on important issues and campaigns. World consumer rights day highlights the basic rights of all consumers so as to protect and protest about the market abuses and social injustices that undermine them.

World Consumer Right Day 2020 Theme

ConsumersInternational.org announced the theme for world consumer rights day 2020 as “the sustainable consumer”.  The sustainable consumer means a consumer by bringing change in lifestyle play their part, along with governments and businesses to help in addressing the global crisis of climate change and biodiversity loss.  Human beings as consumers can help in reducing global warming and environmental issues by relying more on sustainable brands, recycling, reducing food waste and avoiding unsustainable products. Consumers can’t make it alone, in this, they require business and government help so as to make a sustainable society.

How to celebrate World Consumer Right Day:

Every year, organizations plan debates, gatherings and ground events on world consumer Rights day but this year in 2020, due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, government and health organizations have canceled the events that involve the gathering of people. That’s why different organizations are celebrating consumer rights day using social media channels.  

The term consumer right means ‘the right to have information about the quality, potency, quantity, purity, price, and standard of goods or services’, as it may be the case, but the consumer is to be protected against any unfair practices of the trade. In India, every consumer should be aware of consumer rights under the consumer protection act 1986
