SriLanka is a place that is known for its mesmerizing beauty of nature and its rich culture. But education also is one of the most important aspects here. The government gives a high priority to education in Sri Lanka. SriLanka has a literacy rate of around 92% which is significantly higher than most of the South Asian countries and it even ranks among some of the best countries to have an education. The model of education in Srilanka is similar to that what is followed in India but the major difference is instead of colleges, the university model is accepted here. The government mainly looks after the education system and has separate ministries.
Let’s look at some of the best universities in Srilanka
1. University of Colombo
This is the oldest research institute in SriLanka. The University was founded in the year 1921 and got immediately affiliated to the University of London. The university first got a medical college that was the Ceylon medical college and then the university was established. Science, arts, law, and commerce streams are being pursued in this university in Sri Lanka. The university also has a lot of associations with foreign colleges and their professors visit the college every year.
2. University of Kelyaniya
This university is situated in the town of Kelyaniya just outside of Colombo. The old campus was formed in the year 1875 but the new and modern university got underway in the year 1959. This university in Sri Lanka offers under-graduate and post-graduate degrees. The under-graduate courses include social sciences, law, science, medicine, commerce and medicine, and computer and technology. The university has a vast campus and has one of the biggest libraries in the country.
3. University of Moratuwa
The University of Moratuwa is a technical university that was established in the year 1972. It was just a college but later gained university status. The college is well known for organizing and winning coding challenges that are organized by esteem institutions like Google, Microsoft, or Amazon. There is a department of architecture, engineering( that includes most of the common engineering streams, information technology, business, and even medicine which is set up as recently as 2020. It is one of the best technical universities in Srilanka.
4. University of Ruhuna
This is the only university in the southern part of SriLanka. The area and campus are one of the biggest in the whole of the county. The University of Ruhuna was established in 1978 and has ten departments of general study that are mainly science and technology, commerce, arts, social science, facility of medicine, the facility of engineering, management and finance, fisheries, and many more. The college has the largest auditorium in the country which is named after Rabindranath Tagore.
5. University of Peredeniya
This is the largest university in the whole of SriLanka. This was originally the University of Ceylon but later the University of Colombo got that name. According to the latest surveys, it is the top-ranked university in the country. It has nine departments that are mainly science and technology, commerce, arts, social science, plus it has dental science and veterinary science as subjects as well. Agriculture is also taught here. The university is one of the best universities in Sri Lanka.
6. University of Sri Jayewardenepura
The university has a long history with its first setup being dated back to 1873 when it was set up by Buddhist monks for oral learning. The recent establishment was in the year 1959. The university has 7 main departments i.e. Humanities and Social Sciences, Management Studies and Commerce, Medical Sciences, and Technology, Applied Sciences, Engineering, Graduate Studies. The university also had Ayurveda’s study in the curriculum. A lot of foreign students come over to the university in Srilanka as visiting students for their research work.
7. University of Visual and Performing Arts
This university is located in Colombo and gained university status as recently as 2005. The university is said to be established in the year 1893 and is the only university in SriLanka that gives out-degree in visual and performing arts. There are degrees for another general stream as well. Mostly under-graduate studies are being pursued in this university in Srilanka.
8. Wayamba University of SriLanka
The university was established in the year 1999 after a lot of changes in its administrations starting from 1991. This was the first university in Srilanka to offer full courses in the English language only rather than offering in local languages as well. There are 6 facilities in the college that are mainly the Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture, Plantation Management, and Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries, and Nutrition which are the unique courses offered by this university.
9. Rajarata University of SriLanka
This university was opened in the year 1996 in the ancient and historic town of Mihintale, Srilanka. The facilities here are technology, applied sciences, medicine, social science, business, agriculture, and humanities. This university is also predominantly known for the undergraduate degree but a post-graduate degree is also given here.
