Mumbai is one of the largest cities in Maharashtra. It has 6 constituencies of Lok Sabha namely Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai northwest, and Mumbai North.
Mumbai elections are dominated by the regional Party of Shiv Sena. Other parties include the Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, and Communist Paty of India.
Let us look at some popular politicians of Mumbai.
1 Uddhav Thackeray
Uddhav Thackrey is serving as the current Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He formed an alliance with Indian National Congress and Nationalist Congress Party known as “Mahavikas Aghadi”. He is the son of Balasahebh Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena. He took over as the president of Shiv Sena in the year 2003. Before that, he was the editor of Samana, the Marathi language newspaper of Mumbai. He has completed his education from J J School of Fine Arts. Uddhav Thackrey became the CM in the year 2019.
2. Manohar Joshi
Hailing from Shivsena, Manohar Joshi is the former Chief Minister (1995 -1999) and speaker of Lok Sabha (2002-2004). In his early days in Shiv Sena, he also served as the Mayor of Mumbai. He started Kohinoor Training Institute for vocational subjects such as electrician, plumber, welder, repairmen, etc.
3. Ramdas Athavle
Ramdas Athavle is the president of the Republican Party of India. He worked as a voice for Scheduled caste and tribes in Maharashtra. Currently, he is the Minister of state and also represents Maharashtra in Rajya Sabha. Ramdas Athavle is the founder of Parivartan Sahitya Mahamandal and president of Bauddha Dhamma Parishad.
Apart from social and political career he also acted in 2 Marathi films.
4. Nitin Sardesai
Nitin Sardesai hails from the Maharashtra Navanirman Sena party. He is the general secretary of Maharashtra Navanirman Sena. He serves as the president of HAKSE the Hawai Karmachari Sena- the labor union for aviation employees. Nitin Sardesai won in Maharashtra State assembly elections from Mahim. It was the first election contested by the party after the formation.
5. Vinod Tawade
Vinod Tawade is the politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party of Maharashtra. He is the president of BJP in the Mumbai region. He also served as the Higher and Technical Education Minister. Vinod Tawade is the board of directors of Rambhau Malg Prabhodini that provides leadership training to socio-political activists.
6. Prakash Ambedkar
Prakash Ambedkar or Balasaheb Ambedkar is the grandson of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He is the president of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi supporting the needs of the scheduled castes and tribes. Prakash Ambedkar established Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangha and won the election from Akola Constituency for two consecutive times. He also represented Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha.
7. Eknath Gaikwad
Eknath Gaikwad belongs to Ambedkar Family and Indian National Congress. He represented as a member of Parliament (2004-2014) and also a member of the Legislative Assembly (1985-1995). His daughter Varsha Gaikwad, from Indian National Congress, is the current cabinet Minister representing the Dharavi constituency.
8. Dr Vijay Lakshmy Gupta
Dr. Vijay Lakshmy K Gupta joined the Indian Defense accounts service through Union Service Service Commission (UPSC). She also served as Additional Secretary for the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Dr. Vijay Lakshmy Gupta has been instrumental in many reforms for the modernization of the defense system. A book named Ananya written by her depicts the journey of women in India from a young child to adulthood.
9. Bhai Jagtap
Bhai Jagtap or Ashok Jagtap hails from the Indian National Congress political party. He is the vice president of Maharashtra congress. He began his political career when he was a student. He later established a trade union called Bhartiya Kamgar Karmachari Mahasangh, which was a huge success. Bhai Jagtap has served as a two time MLC and MLA.
10. Aaditya Thackeray
Aaditya Thackeray is the grandson of the founder of Shiv Sena Balasaheb Thackeray and son of the current 19th CM of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray. He started his journey in politics from the president of “Yuva Sena” the youth branch of Shiv Sena. He is actively involved in projects such as the ban of single-use plastic in Maharashtra, changing the time table of the Mumbai university exam, etc. He currently is serving as the Cabinet Minister for Tourism and is the MLA from Worli constituency in Mumbai.
