Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India, passed away at 84

Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India, left for heavenly abode on August 31, 2020, at the age of 84 in Army Research and Referral hospital in New Delhi. Mukherjee’s last rites will be performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium at 2 pm on September 1. The country is observing a seven-day mourning period. 

In mid-August, he had undergone brain surgery in Delhi. He had also been suffering from coronavirus. Before his death, doctors declared his condition critical, and he was in a state of septic shock due to lung infection. 

His son Abhijit Mukherjee announced his death on Twitter with a message, “With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri #PranabMukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers, duas & prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of you.”

Pranab Mukherjee was elected as President of India in 2012-2017. He served as a Member of Parliament seven times in the cabinet of several Prime Ministers. 

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also Tweets about it with a short message, “India grieves the passing away of Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He has left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation. A scholar par excellence, a towering statesman, he was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society.”
