Medical stream after 10th: Subjects, Career, and scope

After completing class 10th students have a choice to choose one particular stream out of three- Arts, Commerce and science. Science Stream is further divided into two branches – Medical (PCB) and Non-Medical (PCM).  As it is clear from the name, the medical stream is related to the medication line. 

If you are interested in medicines, formulations, diseases, diagnosis, wearing a white coat, serving the human and humanity and medicinal research. Then go ahead for the medical stream.

We’ll take a glance at the subjects that covered under medical stream  and all the career options it avails:-

Subjects in medical stream:-

1). Physics

2). Chemistry

3). Biology

4). English

5). Optional

Apart from these 4 mandatory subjects (Physics, Chemistry, English and Mathematics), you are required to take on a 5th optional subject. Some schools also have provisions to apply for a 6th subject as well, allowing you to choose 2 optional subjects. Here are some Optional subjects listed below :-

  • Computer Science
  • Home science
  • Physical education
  • Economics
  • Informatics practices
  • Engineering drawing
  • Psychology

So these above mentioned subjects are offered in  Non- medical science stream.

You can also take mathematics as an additional subject along with biology. It opens all the options for you to choose after your 12th  as you can also take over Non-medical career options then. 

Career in Medical stream:-

It’s not true that the medical stream is only limited to a  particular MBBS degree; There are plenty of other career options also you can opt :-

1). M. B. B. S.

 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

It is the most popular undergraduate medical programme in India. If you want  to become practising doctors in the field of allopathic medicine you have to pursue the MBBS degree. It covers  various fields of medicine and human anatomy to teach how to verify different diseases and treat them. The course offers many specializations to enable Students getting detailed knowledge in the particular subjects they are interested in. 

MBBS is the medical degree Accloaded in many countries like the UK, India. 

DURATION: 5.5 years

MBBS Admission Process

Admission to MBBS course is  done on the basis of the NEET-UG (National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Exam for Undergraduate Courses).

It is the all India entrance exam to get admissions across all medical colleges and universities in the country.

Earlier, AIIMS and JIPMER MBBS used to conduct their own entrance exams but now these have been discarded.

Every candidate who wants to get admission in MBBS now has to apply for NEET-UG. 

2. B. D. S. (Bachelor of Dental Surgery): 

This is the only approved and perceived professional dental course in India. It is an undergraduate degree of 5 years which trains students for dental science and surgery.It is the most popular and pursued course after MBBS in India. Students should pass class 12 with at least 50% and qualify NEET exam to get admission in BDS.

3. B. H. M. S. (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery): 

The Homeopathic Education in India is  directed by the National Institute of Homeopathy. Candidates should have passed the HSC Exam from the recognised Board/University in India .

DURATION: 5.5 years

4. B. A. M. S. (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery): 

This degree is awarded to students who  study ayurveda system of medicine in India. The Ayurvedic Education in India is presently directed  by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM).

DURATION: 5.5 years

5. M.D. (Doctor of Medicine): 

It is a higher post-graduate degree for specialty training. MBBS graduates can pursue an  MD degree.

DURATION: 3 years

6. M.S. (Master of Surgery):

This course is designed to do specialization in surgery. MBBS graduates are eligible for this course.

DURATION: 3 years

7) B.Pharma (Bachelor of Pharmacy) : 

It is a job-oriented undergraduate degree for science students who want to work in the pharmacy sector. It’s a 4 years course.

Candidates should have a minimum 55-60% in Class XII with science subjects (PCM, PCB or PCMB). 

It offers distinct career options in pharmaceutical firms, biotechnology firms, medical sectors, private sectors, and public sectors. 

8)B.Sc Nursing : 

In order to be eligible for this course you must pass 12th with Physics, Chemistry & Biology with min 45% marks.It is designed to upgrade critical thinking skills and provide training for practising professional nursing and midwifery in agreement  with the national health policies.

DURATION: 4 years

9) B.P.T (Physiotherapy) :

This course is related to science of physical movement aimed at prevention of disease and disability. 

Applicants must pass in 12th class with min 50% marks in physics, chemistry and biology. You  should  also pass in english subject too.

DURATION: 4.5 years

10)B.O.T (Occupational Therapy):

This course is designed to generate professional Occupational Therapists that can help the physically or mentally challenged people  heal and enjoy their life.

This branch deals with curing and rehabilitating the physically, emotionally and mentally disabled and challenged people .

It is a 3 year program. Candidates must pass 10+2 with PCB (physics, chemistry and biology). Some institutions also take entrance exams for admissions.

11.B.U.M.S(Unani Medicine) : 

For B.U.M.S. course  candidates must have passed 12th with Physics, Chemistry & Biology. Urdu is compulsory up to 10th class .Candidates must have accomplished min 17 years of age as on 31st December of the responding year.

DURATION: 5.5 years

12.Optometry :

 Optometry is related to structure, working and function of the human eye. You have to qualify EYECET to go for        B. Optom Degree.

DURATION: 2 years

13)Ophthalmic Assistant Course 

 An ophthalmic assistant is an occupation in which you have to work with an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to deliver patient care by doing many different eye-related clinical functions.

You should have a high school diploma or equivalent for this course.

DURATION: 2 years

14).Histopathological Lab Technology : 

In this programme you have to work upon Management and planning of the laboratory records.Care and maintenance of laboratory instruments . Collection of samples for laboratory investigations.Laboratory management and planning, receiving and recording of samples, indexing, maintaining records.

DURATION: 1 year

15).D. Pharma(Ayurvedic, Siddha Medicine) : 

Pharmacy is a kind of  profession which relates  health sciences with chemical sciences. 

Candidates who passed the 12th class exams with physics, maths, chemistry or physics, maths and biology can apply for D.Pharma.

DURATION: 2 year

16).B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology 

It’s an undergraduate Medical Lab Technology program and  also called Clinical laboratory science. This is a health profession which is related to treatment, diagnosis and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests.  B.Sc.  in medical laboratory technology is offered by different medical colleges/institutions across the country.Lab technicians need10+2 as the eligibility. It is a 3 year undergraduate course, eligibility to which is passed 12th with min 55% marks.

17).Dental Hygienist Course :

 This course teaches students to work as a chairside assistant who does oral prophylaxis, give instruction in oral hygiene and preventive dentistry but work under supervision of Dental Surgeon. Applicants must have passed the higher secondary school examination  with not less than 50 per cent marks in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

DURATION: 2 years

18).Radiological Assistant : 

Radiology assistants assist radiologists by doing radiologic procedures. Candidates should have a BSc degree in Radiology Assistance, Master of Science in Radiology Assistance or a Radiologist Assistant Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. 

DURATION: 1 year

19).Radiography [Diagnosis & Therapy] : 

Radiography is a professional course, which teaches about performing diagnostic procedures in medical treatment with the use of  radiation. Sometimes, radiographers are also associated in giving radiotherapy treatment to cancer patients

DURATION: 2 years

20).Nuclear Medicine Technology 

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist works under  physician when radioactive materials are used in disease diagnosis and treatments. You should earn a bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or a certificate for this.

DURATION: 2 years
