Karva Chauth 2019: Karva Chauth fast has special significance for married women. It is believed that due to the effect of this fast, the husband’s life is prolonged and all wishes are fulfilled. This year the women will celebrate the fasting on 17th October. Apart from married women, unmarried girls also observe this fast. It is said that if this fast is kept with complete law and order, then one gets the desired life partner. On the day of Karva Chauth, women observe a fast for the whole day and break their fast by drinking water from the hands of the husband after offering moon sighting at night.

Karwa Chauth falls on the fourth day that follows the full moon in the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar. Karva means clay pot while Chauth means fourth. Karwa Chauth is widely celebrated by Hindus and Sikh living in India. As per Mahabharatha, the festival’s origins can be traced back to the time when Savitri begged the god of death, Lord Yama for her husband’s soul. Karwa Chauth is celebrated in different ways in different parts of India but certain things are common like applying mehndi, wearing new outfits, jewelry, makeup and gifts that every married woman does on Karwa Chauth.

Karwa Chauth is very important as well as a difficult fast that all married Hindu women observe. The festival begins just before sunrise and ends after worshiping the moon and doing prayers at night. No water or food can be consumed once the sun rises. The Karwa Chauth fast is done for the longevity of a husband’s life.
