International Museum Day: Know the National Museums of India

Every year on May 18, International Museum Day is celebrated worldwide. ICOM- the International Council of Museums organized International Museum Day every year to highlight the importance of the role of museums that serve society and its development. The objective behind celebrating this museum day is “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples”.

About ICOM

ICOM –International Council of Museum is a worldwide organization created in the year 1946. It is an organization of museum and museum professionals who are committed to protect and preserve the cultural and natural heritage of a country. ICOM has an ICOM code of ethics for museums in which a standard principle for all museum’s governance and professional conduct is given.

International Museum day 2020 Theme

Every year, ICOM sets a theme for the International Museum Day event. This year’s theme is Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion. The theme aims at becoming a rallying point to both celebrate the diversity of perspectives that make up the communities and personnel of museums, and champion tools for identifying and overcoming bias in what they display and the stories they tell. Amid the COVID 19 lockdown, ICOM decides to celebrate the International Museum Day 2020 on the digital platform so as to ensure safety for all.
