International Left-Handers Day: Know some fun facts about lefties

We generally see people working with their right hand and if we see someone doing work with the left hand, we get awestruck and bluntly asked him “Are you a lefty”?

Today, August 13 is a day to celebrate left-handers people in a world designed for right-handers. This year, it’s the 30th annual left-handers day. The left-handers day was started celebrating in the year 1990 by forming a Left-Handers Club that aims to raise awareness about the difficulties a left-handed person faced in a day to day life and also to keep members in touch with developments, make their views known to manufacturers and others, provide a help & advice line, to promote research into left-handedness and development of new left-handed items.

General view on Left handedness

Society has a very different view of left-handed people. They are sometimes looked at with a lot of apprehension, curiosity, doubt, and as something inauspicious, or evil. Children are forced to use their right hand while writing, eating, and doing daily activities in most parts of the world. This is the misconception that most people have and this International left-handers day aims to curb this thought process.

There is no such definitive reason why some people are left-handers? But we can say that brain dominance makes left-handers more artistic and musical as compared to right-handers. The left hemisphere of brain controls the right-handed side of the body and vice-versa and hand dominance is connected with brain dominance on the opposite side. This means that the left hemisphere controls the right hand and vice versa.
