If you are on your trip to Germany, you sure would have enjoyed the numerous architectural designs. If you are tired treating your eyes and craving a treat for your stomach, stuff yourself with some of the dishes that are popular in Germany:

1. Sauerbraten

 Sauerbraten is a roast beef stew and is one of the popular meat dishes of Germany. This is also the national dish of Germany. Sauerbraten takes days to get prepared the way it is. The beef, horse meat is marinated in wine vinegar and different spices. This traditional dish is usually eaten with red cabbage and boiled potatoes or Kartoffelkloesse.  This German dish is usually the main star of the menu in Germany restaurants.

Kartoffelkloesse is a potato dumpling dish in Germany. There are two ways to prepare this dish, one with a mixture of cooked potatoes and raw potatoes other with cooked potatoes only. The potatoes are cooked, mashed and made into small dumplings and then boiled in salt water. This is usually eaten as a side dish to meat dishes. It can also be consumed as a vegetarian dish soaked in lots of gravy.

3. Schweinshaxe

Schweinshaxe is a Pork Knuckle dish. The size of the dish is that of the size of an adult human head. It is the pork knuckle or ham hock. This dish is popular in the Bavaria region of Germany and is one of the typical peasant food. The inexpensive cuts of meat are made and then the meat is marinated which usually takes days or weeks depending upon the cuts.

The meat is roasted for about two to three hours till it gets tender and juicy. This delicious dish or pork is served with cabbage and potatoes.

4.  Rinderroulade

Rinderroulade is a typical Beef Roll dish majorly popular in Saxony, Germany. This dish in Germany is one of its kind which gives the taste of different flavors in one dish. Thin beef is rolled with onions, bacon, mustard, and pickles and then the rolls are roasted in red wine for a great taste. These are usually consumed at dinner with potato dumplings or pickled red cabbage. Roasted winter vegetables are the other sides of this dish. The gravy of Rouladen has great significance and it adds richness in flavor when it is poured over the meat.

5. Weiner Schnitzel

Wiener Schnitzel is a breaded Cutlet which is usually considered as an Austrian Dish but is popular among German dishes. Wiener Schnitzel is made of veal, to be called by this name. Else if another type of meat is used it is called Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein/Pute/Huhn (“Viennese Schnitzel of pig/turkey/chicken”). This another popular dish in Germany is a cutlet in which ham sandwich and cheese is coated with breadcrumbs and then fried. These are usually consumed with green salad and potatoes as side dishes.

6.  Hasenpfeffer

This other nonvegetarian dish is made of rabbit meat. The smallest part of the rabbit that is often too small to be roasted is marinated with wine and onions for hours for it to get soaked in the richness of the flavor. The marinade is then thickened with a rabbit’s blood.

Hase means ‘Hare’ and Pfeffer means ‘pepper’ in German.  The final dish is tossed in various spices before serving to be eaten. This dish is popular in Bavaria, Germany.

7. Bratwurst

Bratwurst is the Grilled Sausage and it is one of the most famous street food in Germany. Bratwurst sausages are made with veal and pork, seasoned with nutmeg, coriander, and ginger.

 The sausage is grilled and topped with mustard and ketchup. It can be consumed with sauerkraut and mustard or in a bread roll.  The crispy sausage can be easily found in food stands all over Germany, mainly in Summer.

8. Knockwurst

Knockwurst is the boiled Sausage made from pork and ground beef. It resembles a big hot dog but much better. The delicious sausage is made using top quality ingredients and is very rich in flavor. The sausage is prepared in boiling water and the pink color of the sausage looks tempting to eat. It is then put into rye bread with lots of Dijon Mustard.

9. Weisswurst

Weisswurst is a Bacon Sausage made from minced veal and pork back bacon is a famous dish of Germany. This traditional dish is famous in Bravia. The sausage is flavored with mace, onions, parsley, lemon, ginger, and cardamom. It is cooked in hot water (not boiling water). Weisswurst is a breakfast snack and is served with a pretzel and a good beer.

10. Kartoffelpuffer

 Kartoffel puffer is a potato pancake and it is another famous dish in Germany. The fried potato pancake resembles that of the latke. It is prepared by mashing the potatoes into a mixture of eggs, parsley, onions. The mixture is then molded into flat circular shapes like regular pancakes, and then deep-fried.  This snack is served with eggs for breakfast. Kartoffelpuffer can also be consumed as a dessert when served with apple sauce and sour cream.
