Education in Bhutan was quite backward but has recently taken an upward curve since the turn of the century. Till the yesteryears, education was provided only in monasteries in the traditional form only. Western education was introduced as early as 1907 but was stopped after 1926. After the 1950s, there was a set up of private schools in Bhutan, and education was taken as a major project in their 5-year planning process.

 Bhutan had a low rate of students attending the school at first which was changed by the intervene of Government. Though the country has colleges most of the Bhutanese people receive their higher education and technical study from neighboring countries like India, Bangladesh as well as countries like Japan, Singapore, or even Australia. This outsourcing of students though has reduced in the past few years with more and more focus given on education. Bhutan has mainly two universities the Royal University of Bhutan and Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical science. There are many colleges in Bhutan affiliated to these two universities.

Let’s look at the various Colleges in Bhutan

1. Royal Thimphu College

It is the first private college that has been set up in Bhutan. The college offers a degree in general courses like science, arts, and commerce. The campus is around 25 acres in space and offers a great environment to study. The college has a professor from not only Bhutan but also from other countries giving a diverse way of education to everyone and also gives an international perspective to study.

2. Sherubtse College

Sherubtse college is one of the oldest colleges in Bhutan to be established under RUB. It was a junior college at the beginning but changed to a senior college by the year 2003. It offers multidisciplinary courses in Science, arts, commerce, Physical education, and others. It has 10 main departments and is one of the few colleges in Bhutan where research work is carried out in the full flow. It’s located in the Trashigang district in east Bhutan.

3. Gedu College of Business Studies

The Gedu college is one of the first business school to be set up in Bhutan. The programs train students to amass the skills and competencies required for career in business administration and entrepreneurship. The college has a wonderful team of both local and international faculty having academic and industrial backgrounds. The Entrepreneurship development cell is one of the best for promoting startup or any business. It was established in the year 2008.

4. College of Science and Technology

This is the very first college in Bhutan to provide undergraduate degree programmes to the students. It is under the Royal Thimphu College. The faculty is very diligent and friendly with the students to make the learning fun. This college has been providing bachelor degree programmes for Civil Engineering and architecture, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Instruments and Control Engineering, and Geology Engineering. College of science and technology in Bhutan also shows great focus on the renewable energy course and provides a master’s degree for it. It usually conducts short term training and is also recognized by the Royal Civil Service Commission for conducting the courses for the civil servants. The most special feature of this college in Bhutan is that it has a special internet wired service for 24 x 7 reaching all its students and teachers fr communication and doubt clearance.

5. Paro College of Education

Paro college of education in Bhutan is located 2250 metres above the sea. It is located in Western Bhutan and has a good road connection with the airport which is nearly a 10 minutes car ride and the capital city of Bhutan is just about an hour from the college. It was first recognized as a Pre School Care Training Centre in 1975. Now It provides graduate degrees, diplomas, postgraduate degrees as well as it has several master degree programs. It also has a research centre namely Centre of Education and Development which was established in the year 2001.

6. College of Natural Resources

This college of Natural Resources in Bhutan was established in the year 1992.  It was mainly established to guide the students in the way of conserving nature and promoting the economic development of the country. The various programs related to Natural Resource management are being taught to the students at the undergraduate and the diploma levels. It has now become a dynamic, well known, and an internationally respected organization which is now promoting the sustainable development of the country.

7. College of Language and culture studies

Located in Taktse in Trongsa, this college in Bhutan offers a diploma as well as undergraduate programs. College of Language and cultural studies offers degrees in language and communication. It has two research centers and soon master’s degrees, as well as Ph.D. degrees, will be made available from this college.

8.  Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical science

There is no medical school present in Bhutan but there is a school that trains you in nursing and community health as well as traditional medicine. This is the only college in Bhutan that is devoted to health care and have high requirements to be eligible for admission in Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical science.

9. Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology

This is one of the recent colleges in Bhutan that has been set up to increase the number of graduates who will be well equipped in the knowledge of computers as well as coding. The college till now offers a BCA program and is one of the few colleges to offer a hand on skill in the course.

10. Jigme Namgyal Engineering college

It is one of the few institutes that offer engineering courses in the country Bhutan. The college was set up in the year 1972 under Royal Bhutan University. A lot of undergraduate students pursue a technical degree here. Diploma programs are also given to the students here.

Bhutan is not so well acquitted with higher studies but the government is trying its best to encourage more and more people to take up higher education to improve the economy as well as the education structure of the country. So these were some of the colleges in Bhutan that you should know about.
