Mass communication plays a prominent role in modern society. Its existence is like air in the environment. We can’t imagine life without mass communication.  Mass Communication is the process of exchanging or sending information to a group of people through various channels. The Channel of communication includes social media, advertisement, public relations, newspapers, radio, television, etc. 

Mass communication’s purpose is not only sending and providing the information to users, it has various purposes or objectives also.

20 purposes of Mass communication:

1.  To inform – Mass communication is the process of exchanging information with the general public. It is the foremost purpose that mass communication does. Today we all perceive information from different sources like newspapers, television, social media, radio, etc.

2.  To entertain – Mass communication aims to entertain you by providing content such as films, news, music, drama, videos. Except for film, videos, or music, articles in the newspaper, stories, and features are also entertaining and informative.

3.  Social interaction – Mass communication makes it easy for you to interact with different people and can increase your virtual social circle. By using social media, you can share your views, ideas, and opinion with people who are not even known to you.

4.  To persuade – Persuasion means to make-believe in you. Mass communication aims to make-believe and changes the opinions, thinking, and ideas of the audience. Advertisements are the best mass communication device used by companies to persuade consumers.

5.  To achieve goals – The objective of mass communication is to achieve the target or goals set by an organization by influencing the audience. The audience can be customers, the general public, employees, government agencies, etc. 

6.  To build public opinion – Mass communication tries to build public opinion on different issues by articles, editorials, etc. It provides a real picture of the world, government policies to create public opinion.

7.  To explain government policies – Mass communication aims at providing complete information about government policies and procedures so that the general public must be aware of the government’s working.

8.  To educate – Mass communication’s purpose is to educate people about the government’s new programs and manifestos. It can be educational and health programs like sanitation, clean city, vaccination drive, etc

9.  To promote new products and services – Mass communication aims to promote a new company, any business,  product or service by advertising and publishing the details about it.

10.  To create public awareness – Mass Communication creates awareness among the public about fake news, rumors, and controversies. It helps the audience to avoid fake news and aware of correct and real information. 

11. To face emergencies – Mass communication spreads the message of upcoming natural calamities to the people. It influences the audience on how to face the emergency and take safety measures. 

12. To face rumours – Rumours about fake information spread like a fire in the forest. It affects the goodwill of the corresponding company. Mass Communication reveals the truth about the product, service, or organization that clarifies all the rumours.  

13. To build international relations – Mass communication aims to provide connections globally.

14. To observe – Observation is the best way to learn. Through Mass communication media like social media, you observe people and their activities and get to learn more about them and also increase your interaction with them. 

15. To interpret – Mass communication interprets the data, statistics which helps you to get complete information about a particular topic or incident. For example, how many people were dead in an accident, how many cases of Corona increased in a day, etc. 

16. To promote cultural diversity – Cultural activities help to promote the growth of the children. Mass communication promotes the activities of cultural diversity that build a cultural love in the audience. 

17.  To bring coordination among employees – Communication brings coordination. When there is communication, discussion and idea-sharing occurs between employees, cordial relation develops.

18. To create a new market – Mass communication is used to create a new market in society. It aims to promote the market as well as the product and the services of it. 

19. To establish a bond of labor and management – We generally see labor and management on war front with each other because of a lack of communication. But now, mass communication provides an environment where labor can share problems with management and establish a bond with them.

20. To verify the data and norms – Verification of data is a necessary part of mass communication. Without verification of news, no news is broadcasted on television. It works the same for the newspaper, radio, etc. Mass communication’s aim is to provide the right and authentic information to the audience.
